Climate change and macroeconomics. How sexy of a news subject is that? I know I'm into it. And the secret is out, a lot of you are too. Story on the way for @CourthouseNews.
Catch the live hearing:
@CourthouseNews Dr. Marshall Burke, of Stanford’s Center on Food Security and the Environment has done his research on climate change and its impact.
Stanford and Berkeley research found:
Climate change will have a fundamental negative impact in coming decades if unmitigated.
-By 2050, $5T in damage
-By 2100: Tens of trillions in terms of lost value
People tend to think first of sea level rise and impact to agriculture when they think about climate crisis.
But Burke says the evidence shows, output in key sectors, like financial services, real estate, manufacturing, customer service, all productivity drops when temps rise.
Your cognitive functions slow down when you are overheated. That's science.
"Hot temperatures literally make us dumber,” Burke says .
It also worsens security risks. Police chiefs recognize when temps are hotter, certain crimes spike: aggravated assault, sexual violence, homicide. Excessive heat also increases suicide.
Lastly, Burke says, for those who can only focus on the cost associated with transforming society in order to address climate change: "Focusing exclusively on the costs and not the benefits is terrible economics and terrible policy.”
Ret. General Stephen Cheney, who now heads up the American Security Project, tells Congress: the danger climate poses to military bases around the U.S. and the world is a present threat.
"Naval bases are going under water," Cheney said.
"Long term mitigation is the solution but as far as some are concerned, that ship has left the port. Sailors are going underwater, all bases are threatened."
Parris Island in SC evacuated during Dorian.
"Tyndall Air Force Base is no more," he adds.

Note: Hurricane Michael in 2018 wrecked Tyndall. Also, as climate scientists have stated repeatedly, with warmer temps, storms can be more intense and linger longer. It also extends threats later into hurricane season. Michael, a year ago, was a CAT 5 October storm.
He adds: "It is also heat. Many of our bases, Fort Bragg in NC has to shut down due to black flag conditions.
In Alaska, a NORAD base is sinking through the permafrost. We have a Marine brigade on the Indian Ocean that is about to go under water, we have to move it somewhere."
