I just finished @elgindy_'s "Blind Spot"

It's probably the single best book I've ever read on the US and the failures of Israeli-Palestinian peace. It's such a brilliant and devastating account that it's almost chilling

The same goes for anyone in government or Congress who's serious about rethinking the fundamental assumptions of US policy in the Middle East
@elgindy_ @BrookingsFP @BrookingsPress What's remarkable about this book is that it somehow manages to completely avoid polemics. This is sober, practical, and clear-sighted work. And, importantly, there are clear policy proposals that follow directly if you accept the thrust of @elgindy_'s account
@elgindy_ @BrookingsFP @BrookingsPress It's not enough to criticize US policy on Israel-Palestine. That, by now, is obvious to most reasonable observers. What @elgindy_ does in this book is go quite a bit further: He identifies the flawed assumptions that fatally undermined the efforts of every US administration

But I'm not an elected Democrat. And as someone who believes in ideology (in the non-pejorative sense) over party, I worry that the long-term costs of an impeachment effort that can't but fail in meeting its ostensible objective may be, well, costly

Another thing I struggle with is the fact that if impeachment is a constitutional option and if it isn't exercised now, then when would it ever be? (I doubt a president will ever shoot someone on 5th avenue). This is the "what the heck, just do it" argument

Trump deserves to be impeached but that doesn't mean he *should* be impeached. Maybe that's obvious but I think too many assume that if the former is true, then the latter must also be true

One issue is that impeachment was designed as a way for "statesmen," people who put the country first, to agree on removing uniquely terrible presidents
Impeachment can no longer be what it was intended (or hoped) in light of hyper-partisanship. Impeachment, perhaps for the rest of our lives, will be seen as a partisan cudgel to remove or delegitimize presidents from the other party. But, well, it *cannot* actually remove anyone

@ProvMagazine This has been one of the key questions and dilemmas of recent years, and I've heard it time and time again: as bad as dictators may be, at least they're good for Christians and other religious minorities. But are they really?
It's not necessarily a bad or silly argument. There's actually quite a bit in the political science literature that lends itself to arguments that democracy can only come after other things come first

I love my grandad, but for years now we've struggled to have anything to say to each other, so we drifted apart. A month ago I decided enough was enough, and arrived at his house with a big stack of books - an excuse to talk to each other, and something to talk about when we did.
Afterwards we've spoken about once a week, as he finished one book and moved on to the next, and I'm plotting my next stack of books now. It's lovely to have conversation. He's really into Victorian novels, which I luckily have a LOT of, but I'm trying him on other stuff too.
Anyway, part of the first stack of books, was The Help, and when he finished it, he phoned me up to complain at how the ending was "not on" and how annoyed he was because "the only person who got anything out of it all was the white lady, and I don't think that's fair at all"
