Trump deserves to be impeached but that doesn't mean he *should* be impeached. Maybe that's obvious but I think too many assume that if the former is true, then the latter must also be true

One issue is that impeachment was designed as a way for "statesmen," people who put the country first, to agree on removing uniquely terrible presidents
Impeachment can no longer be what it was intended (or hoped) in light of hyper-partisanship. Impeachment, perhaps for the rest of our lives, will be seen as a partisan cudgel to remove or delegitimize presidents from the other party. But, well, it *cannot* actually remove anyone
It is impossible to imagine a scenario—short of Trump shooting someone on 5th avenue (but even then)—where the two parties will agree on who deserves/ should be removed. Which means that impeachment, in practice, will be more about attempts to undermine or question legitimacy
