new reporting from my colleagues on that *other* whistleblower complaint, alleging interference in mandatory annual audit of president's/VP's taxes: it came from career IRS official; alleges interference in audit process by at least 1 Treas'y Dept official washingtonpost.com/business/econo…
Also: whistleblower confirmed in an interview w/ Post this week that he had filed a formal complaint and sent it to the tax committee chairs in BOTH houses of Congress, including Sen. Grassley (R-Iowa), and to Treasury Dept Inspector General for Tax Administration on July 29
Fun fact, via the great @stevertax: You know that Nixon line, “People have got to know whether or not their president is a crook. Well, I'm not a crook"? It wasn't about Watergate. He was actually discussing allegations that he'd cheated on his taxes
@stevertax Turns out Nixon, despite getting a clean bill of health from the IRS, owed nearly $500k in unpaid taxes & interest. This episode led to mandatory annual IRS audits of the president & VP, and started new norm for presidents to voluntarily release their tax returns
@stevertax It's this mandatory annual audit process (which Trump & Pence are now subject to) that the anonymous IRS whistleblower alleges a Treasury official interfered with.
@stevertax I've seen a lot of parallels drawn recently between Nixon & Trump scandals (coverups, enemies lists, GOP lawmakers circling the wagons, etc.). But the role that tax returns might play is an underappreciated one.
