Whilst the govt front bench clings to idea that we will leave on Oct 31st come what may, Brussels source tells me debate in EU “shifting to parameters of an extension” ie how long it should be. Opinion ranges between January 31st to the end of June.
“They don’t want rolling extensions”, so June has advantages, source tells me. Beyond that though and you get into MFF (new EU budget round) so that is upper limit for the moment.
Tory backbenches would go apoplectic over extension to June. They would demand election and possibly want to fight it on unilateral withdrawal. But of course election not in their gift. June timescale would be golden window for those who want second ref...
Source also tells me there has been some discussion at top EU levels of Mark Sedwill (Cabinet Secretary) or Sir Tim Barrow (British Ambassador to EU) signing the extension letter.
