The PM and Jean Claude Juncker presumably have something extra up their sleeve to the Barnier proposals. One EU official put it to me that language of Barnier’s tweets allowed a flexibility that could be worked on by both sides BUT 1
This is not the same thing as legally-binding changes to the backstop. Even if they wanted to change the backstop, which means changing the Withdrawal Agreement, Messrs Juncker and Barnier don’t have the legal power to do so. It has to come from the 27 EU leaders 2
So might the PM get something modest (dressed up as more than modest) tonight and then, if she loses tomorrow’s vote, say she’ll try to push for more from EU leaders st their summit in Brussels next week? 3

PM will soon address EU leaders at Brussels summit. She normally speaks for approx 15 mins. EU leaders can then ask her questions but they won't all sit and 'negotiate' together. After questions, Theresa May will leave the room so the 27 leaders can debate amongst themselves /1
EU leaders reject narrative that there's only 2 options now: Theresa May's deal or a no deal #Brexit . They will also debate option of a longer extension if the deal is rejected again by parliament next week /2
EU sees no 'ideal' solution here. They don't like idea of a long extension or rolling short extensions with permanent threat of a no deal #Brexit round the corner ("We've had enough drama" one EU diplomat told me) BUT leaders will want to avoid a no deal Brexit if they can /3

Is there really such a big difference between France + Germany over #Brexit extension and way forward over next days? Not really. There are big differences in Merkel/Macron political styles. Big differences in message they want to send own domestic audience when talk Brexit /1
Bottom line for EU leaders when they meet today - aside from all their #Brexit frustration/irritation/fatigue is they hope to avoid a no deal Brexit if possible but they don’t intend to throw Ireland under a bus to try to ensure a deal by offering something new on backstop /2
As well as the PMs short extension request, EU leaders will debate a longer extension that the UK could ask for/the EU could offer if Theresa May’s negotiated #Brexit deal is rejected again in parliament next week /3

Brexit latest: PM meeting with senior aides in No10 now to plot a way through this week’s carnage. I’m told it’s most likely she will decide to change tomorrow’s vote from a meaningful one to a provisional one - ie her deal, plus Cox’s changes (1)

Melania Ciot, for Romanian presidency of Council, starts by asking how UK demands for 'alternative arrangements' can be reconciled with EU position Agreement is 'best deal possible'. Says: 'It's clear this state of affairs makes a disorderly exit of the UK more likely still.'
Jean-Claude Juncker: 'The Agreement remains the best and only deal possible. The EU said so in Nov, we said so in Dec, we said so after the first meaningful vote in Jan. The debate and votes in the HoC yesterday don’t change that. The Agreement will not be renegotiated.'
