1. A Kurdish official with the SDF has shared a video with reporters which he says shows a small group of ISIS prisoners escaping from the Navkur prison in Qamishlo. I’m not on the ground so this needs further confirmation, but if true this is not good news.
2. The SDF has not shared which prisoners are held in which facility, but I wanted to list some of the most dangerous detainees so that we can better grasp what is at stake here if the Kurds are unable to secure the prisons & camps holding the 1000s of ISIS members + relatives
3. According to @JcBrisard who has done some of the deepest work on French jihadists, one of the most crucial is Adrian Guihal, subject of a French arrest warrant. He claimed responsibility for the Nice, St Etienne & Magnanville attacks in France. The Nice attack killed 87 people
4. The horrific Nice attack in which the assailant drove a refrigerated truck onto the crowded promenade, crushing dozens of people, has become iconic not just for ISIS but also for white extremists. The Charlottesville attack which killed one is believed to be inspired by Nice
5. Among the mysteries of the Nice attack is the extent of the assailant’s links to ISIS, a question Adrian Guihal may be able to answer. In addition, there are numerous accessories to mass murder in the Kurdish-held facilities. Take Swiss jihadist Damien Grivat.
6. Damien had foreknowledge of the coordinated Paris attacks which killed 130 people. The research of @JcBrisard indicates that he reached out to his sister hours before the 2015 killings to warn her:
7. Among the women being held at al-Hol, who have been portrayed as brainwashed spouses, are Mylène Facre & Dorothée Maquere, wives of the Clain brothers, senior members of the external ops branch of the Emni (or Amniyat), the unit that coordinated attacks worldwide
8. Canadian Mohammed Khalifa, the English-language narrator of ISIS propaganda, who gave his first interview to me earlier this year, is the keeper of many of ISIS’ secrets. He worked under the emir of ISIS’ media ministry, a unit closely tied to attacks (Photo by @ivorprickett)
9. During our interview, Khalifa repeatedly said “No comment” when asked specifics including about his relationship with ISIS spokesman Adnani, who headed external ops unit. Given how tightly tied propaganda was to attacks, I suspect Khalifa knows a lot: nytimes.com/2019/02/17/wor…
10. Khalifa's videos were considered significant enough that when he first began narrating them (and we didn't yet know who he was), the FBI went so far as to issue a notice asking the public's help in order to identify him: fbi.gov/news/stories/h…
11. Both US and Canadian law enforcement tried to get the recording of my interview after it was published, something we cannot share because we're not an extension of law enforcement. He is of international significance and interest yet he is now in one of the threatened prisons
12. We know Belgian foreign fighters were critical to ISIS' external operations. Among those imprisoned is Abdellah Nouamane, who threatened Belgium, according to one of my favorite journalists @GuyVanVlierden. "Everything will be blown up," Nouamane said. "Schools, hospitals."
@GuyVanVlierden 13. Another is recruiter Caner Cankurtaran, who played a critical role, according to @GuyVanVlierden's reporting, in channeling other Belgians into the arms of the Islamic State:
@GuyVanVlierden 14. Like many captured ISIS member he claims he didn't kill anyone, but another imprisoned fighter identified him as an instructor in an ISIS military camp. That's not a low-level position. ISIS placed great trust in those it asked to train the next generation of jihadists
@GuyVanVlierden 15. I spent weeks in Tajikistan last year investigating the killing of four Western cyclists, including two Americans. The architect of the attack, Hussein Abdusamadov agreed to sit down with me & made clear that those who ordered him to carry out this attack are still in Syria.
@GuyVanVlierden 16. There is initial reporting indicating one of Abdusamadov's emirs was captured during the fall of Baghuz earlier this year. I was not able to track down his location within the Kurdish-guarded prisons, but if he's detained, we are talking about a major attack planner for ISIS.
@GuyVanVlierden 17. Out of this toxic soup, the US has removed from the Kurdish-run jails the "Beatles" who oversaw the captivity of Western prisoners held alongside James Foley. Super. But what about the captors of Rudaw cameraman Massoud Aqeel and thousands of others? rudaw.net/english/kurdis…
@GuyVanVlierden I met this sweet soul yesterday. He came all the way from Germany to a talk I was giving in Holland and described his 9-month-long ordeal. One of the men who kidnapped him is in a jail threatened by the Turkish offensive. His prison ID is below Tweeted with his accord:
@GuyVanVlierden 19. There's something particularly cynical about ensuring that those who harmed American citizens are brought to justice, while creating a situation that could lead to the escape of those who hurt citizens of other countries.
20. Latest development according to the SDF is that this group of women were caught trying to flee the al-Hol camp, currently holding 70,000 people, most of them relatives of ISIS members. ISIS understands that the chaos engendered by the Turkish offensive is an opportunity:
21. Latest: The SDF confirms five ISIS members escaped the prison during the jail break. No info on who they are. Also tagging @masoud_aqil, who survived for 200+ days in an ISIS jail. One of his kidnappers pictured in this blurry image is in one of the threatened Kurdish prisons
