For decades, administrations of both political parties appointed big donors as ambassadors. They're usually not experts in the country, foreign policy—or anything else relevant to the job. But Donald Trump perfected the act of selling swanky diplomatic posts to rich buffoons.
Here are just a few of Trump’s unqualified ambassador-donors. Together, these wealthy donors gave an average of nearly $450,000 to Trump’s Inaugural committee—which is now under federal investigation.
Gordon Sondland, Donald Trump’s ambassador to the EU, who was blocked from testifying before Congress last week, got his job after donating $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee.
Robert “Woody” Johnson, the owner of the New York Jets who participated in a tax scheme that cost the U.S. Treasury an estimated $300 million, donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee. He’s currently the ambassador to the United Kingdom.
Doug Manchester, a real estate executive who was accused of inappropriate behavior with female employees working for the newspaper he owned, donated $1 million to Trump’s inaugural committee. His nomination for ambassador to the Bahamas is still pending.
Trump nominated Kelly Knight Craft, a “gold-level” member at Trump’s hotels and whose husband donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration, as our ambassador to Canada. She spent more than half of her time outside Canada, so Trump rewarded her by nominating her to be UN ambassador.
Don Tapia, a former electrical product company chairman, was nominated to be our ambassador to Jamaica—a country he had not visited for about 20 years—after donating $100,000 to Trump’s inauguration.
Lynda Blanchard, David Melech Friedman, Robert Kohorst, John Rakolta, Carla Sands, Jeffrey Ross Gunter, Jamie McCourt, and George Glass became ambassadors after they, or their associates, gave a combined $1.63 million.
Trump may think a big campaign check qualifies someone to represent our country abroad—but I don’t. I've pledged to not participate in the corrupt practice of selling cushy diplomatic posts to wealthy donors. And my new plan to get big money out of politics goes further.
I'll prohibit campaign donations and political spending from being a consideration in the selection of an ambassador. I'll also ban corporations and lobbyists from donating to inaugural committees and place contribution limits on donations. Read more here: ewar.ren/campaign-finan…
