Candidates at #DemDebate talking about foreign interference in American elections. One step we need to take to protect our democracy is improving our election infrastructure. Here's how. bit.ly/2VMA9hn
1 - Update voting machines. In 2018, 41 states used voting machines that were at least 10 years old as primary polling place equipment in some counties and towns. This makes it hard to maintain machines or find replacement parts.
2. Require that all machines produce a paper backup of an individual’s vote. Paper backup records are our best defense against cybersecurity risks, but 11 states still use voting machines that don’t produce them.
3. Mandate post-election audits. Paper records of an individual’s vote can be used after an election to check whether electronic tallies from machines are accurate. This process helps detect hacks or other inaccuracies in election results.
