The key merit of democracy has always bn that it was the friend of order, allowing political change to be brought abt without violence. If you both reject democracy & prevent change, you shld fear disorder.
The past dozen years has seen 2 great efforts by the British Establishment to prevent change. 1st (in collaboration with other developed world govts) it sought to prevent economic change - the large re-distribution of wealth that the banking crisis of 2007-09 shld hv induced.+
+Now, since 2016, it has sought to prevent political change - Brexit. These 2 great reactionary acts hv alienated vast parts of the electorate, in different ways. Many people feel the economic system is unjust & they are excluded. Others feel the same of the political system.+
+Both of them are right in their criticisms. The communists are right on the economy & the "there's no point in voting" types are right on politics. But both are wrong in their solutions - which would make everything worse, not better.+
+It's true that "we don't live in a democracy any more" in that the key laws under which we live come from a system from which voters have explicitly withdrawn their consent. But we still have elections to come. We can win them & tear it all down & start again. Do not despair yet
You can still get your revenge by voting. You don't need to smash things up to do it. I understand. I empathize. But don't give up believing. The Good Guys will still win, & we will do it by staying as the Good Guys whilst we do.
