As a Canadian living outside AB/SK, I'm experiencing All of Canada EXCEPT AB/SK alienation by Western Protest Conservatives who keep on trying to impose Harperism on all of the rest of us.

As such, I've some demands as well:

a. Stop lying to Western Canadians about that which equalization is. You transfer not a cent to the feds. It is the feds who opt to set aside money that is rightfully theirs in order to help have-not provinces. If equalization were cancelled, AB wouldn't have a nickle more.
3.
b. Alberta must institute a provincial sales tax. Every other Canadian that does pay a provincial/territorial sales tax is pretty much tired of subsidizing your 0% PST every time an AB government can't balance its books.

@nikiashton 1. ICYMI Niki, it was the NDP that counter proposed how the electoral reform committee should be formed (under the pretense of protecting Canadians from Liberals using their majority to impose a system), and the PM accepted it.

He gave you your way.
@nikiashton 2. Then, once you got your way, the NDP behaved on the Committee in the exact same way they said the Liberals would. It thought ONLY of what was in its own partisan best interest.

So, he gave you your way, and you did nothing with that advantage.
@nikiashton 3. If you were being honest, you'd admit electoral reform got dropped not because of anything the PM did, but rather due to your party's inability to come to an agreement with Conservatives on what kind of reform to put in place.

So you got your way, then squandered it.

The introductory section of the NDP platform starts off repeating some unfounded myths. (It suggests, for example, that wages are flat. They're not. Canada has had many years of sustained real wage growth.) All the parties feed this false sense tho. 2/n
First big-ticket item is universal prescription drug program, beginning with a new investment of $10B per year. Contingent, of course, on 'working with provinces' which might be more challenging than they think. But if there's a new universal program needed, it's this. B+. 3/n

Since the Greens and NDP have the only vaguely-progressive candidates running in my riding, I'm spending part of my Saturday night reading both platforms. (A thread may or may not follow, depending on how enthusiastic I get about it).
The "Green Vision: Canada in 2030" section is remarkable in that it's basically describing a #NUMTOT utopia. #NUMtopia? greenparty.ca/en/platform/in…
I'm impressed that (in the PDF document) indigenous issues are the first section, followed by climate change. We can't address one without the other and it's nice to see that recognised.

VAT is the most efficient tax that exists, besides other corrective taxes like carbon taxes, and land value taxes. Instead of taxing what people put into the economy, VAT taxes what people take from the economy. VAT on its own is regressive but with UBI is the optimal tax system.
"I want real freedom of movement in Europe where people have the ability to move, but they also have the ability to stay."

Barb Jacobson making the vital point that an EU-wide dividend would not only eliminate holes in national UBI systems, but also reduce desperation migration.

In 2018, the newly elected @fordnation govt, who told voters both during and after the campaign that the #BasicIncome Pilot begun in 2017 would continue for 3 years as planned, canceled it and refused to gather data.

Of the 424 recipients surveyed, comprising 9.4% of the total experimental population, 44.5% were employed part-time or full-time, which points to a possible increase overall in employment from 35%, with a possible increase in PT work, decrease in FT work, and more volunteering.
In the baseline survey (the only official data gathered as part of the OBIP's launch) about 11% of participants volunteered in their communities. Among the recipients in this survey over 25% volunteered. These unfortunately can't be directly compared, but it seems noteworthy IMO.
