ACT results are out…. But there’s a lot more to the story than the headline numbers!

Read this thread to learn how the headline numbers may not be telling us what we think they are. #NVed
2/?
It is true ACT results were released this week and Nevada had the lowest score of all the states that test 100% of their students.

But something seems fishy here??? #NVed
3/?
How's it possible they are doing so much better than NV when just 4 yrs earlier when leaving 8th grade NV was near the middle of the pack when we look at results from the National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) the most important test in the US???
4/?
The answer is in retake rates.

In states like TN, MS, and LA over 65% of high school seniors have taken the ACT at least 2 times. In NV less than 19% of students retake the test.
5/?
When students take state testing all through ES & MS the test is not timed. As long as they're working they can keep going

When they take the ACT it's a timed test & if you spend too much time thinking you won’t finish the test. Students who retake do significantly better.
6/?
ACT has done research around the importance of students taking the ACT multiple times: act.org/content/dam/ac…

"Repeat-testers' latest scores had an average Composite score 2.9 points higher than their single-test counterparts."
7/?
In fact when we compare the results of students who retake the ACT we see a very different ranking of results.

Now, Nevada is back in the middle of the pack like they were back in 8th grade when there was a level playing field.

In fact when we compare the results of students who only take the ACT once we see a very different ranking of results.

Now, Nevada is back in the middle of the pack like they were back in 8th grade when there was a level playing field.
9/?
How does this play out?

Let’s compare MS & NV

NV students who take the ACT once score higher than MS kids who take it once: 16.9 vs. 16.2

NV kids who retake the ACT > MS kids who retake: 21.8 vs. 19.5

Overall avg is lower in NV because less kids retake the exam
10/?
Here’s the scores across all states that test 100% of their students on the ACT

The closer the green dot to the blue the more students in that state retake the test. Look how far NV’s green dot is from the blue dot

We’re not giving our students the supports they NEED!
11/?
YES, our students achieve when we provide the proper supports

The same time ACT results seemed stagnant, NV was the fastest improving in AP pass rates in the NATION!
Just a few years ago we significantly lagged the national avg & now our HS students are EXCEEDING it!
12/?
And advanced diplomas have steadily been increasing since 2011.

This is more evidence of improved academic achievement in high school.
13/?
It’s not because there are more students. There is a higher rate of students achieving an advanced diploma.

1 in 4 high school students is now leaving high school in NV with an advanced diploma. A rate that is higher than it has ever been!
14/?
What’s the problem?

We’ve implemented a policy that requires students take the ACT, but we haven't provided the resources & supports to make sure they're successful

To see significant gains we need to provide supports that students, teachers, & schools get in TN, MS, & LA

And there’s still more #Nved news to cover!
