The Trump administration continues to politicize homelessness- one of our country’s most urgent, tragic and *solvable* crises. This is deeply distressing and unacceptable. 1/
They prey on people’s fear, attempt to reinforce harmful stereotypes and propose policies that not only potentially harm people who are homeless, but are cost prohibitive, unconstitutional, and do nothing to address the underlying cause of homelessness. 2/
The solution to homelessness is affordable homes - not, as the WH is considering, further criminalization, sweeping people who are homeless into increasingly unsafe areas, or warehousing people in untenable & unsustainable conditions. 3/
Homelessness in California is a crisis, as in many other areas of the country - one that demands urgent action at fed, state, local levels. Fed attention to solving the crisis is long overdue, but Trump and his admin are clearly not acting in good faith. 4/
Instead, the president and @SecretaryCarson have taken actions – time and time again – that would worsen homelessness in our country. 5/
They’ve proposed drastically shrinking or eliminating federal programs keeping people affordably housed; tripling rents for lowest-income subsidized residents & raising rents others; evicting 100,000 people in immigrant families from subsidized housing... 6/
...allowing homeless shelters to discriminate & refuse shelter to transgender people.
This latest effort is more of the same: demonizing those with low incomes and failing to do what’s really needed - invest in affordable homes.
