Sharing an anecdote of a time I made an ass of myself because it’s a decent metaphor for a press committed to bothsides coverage of a GOP going off the rails.
A long time ago, I was getting out of a peddleboat, and I had one foot on the dock and one foot in the boat. I can’t remember why, but I hadn’t tied it to the dock.

I quickly found myself doing the splits, too stretched out and off balance to jump onto the dock or back onto the peddleboat.
I stood there, feet drifting further and further apart, with a helpless smile on my face. And jumped in the lake.

If it wasn’t obvious, the jackass with one foot on the dock and one on a peddleboat is the press. The Democrats are the dock. And the GOP is drifting off, untethered.
The blue is the dock. The red is drifting off, untethered. And the press keeps telling us they’re both the same. 
The GOP has been more ideologically extreme for decades now, and still drifting. Their leader is a blatantly criminal fascist who kidnaps refugees and brags about assaulting women. How can you bothsides that?
The metaphor only goes so far. When I fell in the lake, no one was hurt. Hell, my friends were deeply entertained. But we need the press to get both feet on stable ground.
