IF the MRP is accurate then Britain's Conservatives will wake on December 13 with much stronger roots in blue-collar Britain; from Wakefield to Ashfield; from Don Valley to Great Grimsby. The liberal-conservative Johnson leading a far more socially conservative electorate #ge2019
One inevitable by-product of Britain's vote for Brexit was the realignment of the Conservative Party. Consistently, since 2016, its electorate has become older, more blue-collar, more left behind but also more pro-Brexit, more anxious over rapid social change & immigration
This will inevitably introduce a tension into the heart of the Conservative Party. As post-election liberal-conservatives pivot back to try and reconnect with Remainia they may find themselves constrained by a Conservative electorate that holds a fundamentally different value set
Alternatively, Johnson's Conservatives will somehow find a way of developing and maintaining a one-nation brand that is able to speak to both sides, to transcend our Brexit divides. It is an incredibly difficult political challenge but not entirely impossible #ge2019
