Blyth Valley a former mining constituency devastated by austerity. Never been Conservative, ever.

Votes in a Tory MP for a govt that brought austerity. The North East s comonly agreed by economists to be the region likely to be the most nergatively impacted by Brexit.

Tragic.
The working class are literaly voting for their oppressors, bringers of austerity, while their supposed leader sat on the fence on the issue of the most rightwing project in recent history.

Make no mistake, this is not going to end well.

There are now logically only 2 paths to a Labour victory over next 5 years

1. Either by exposing the ridiculous pointlessness of a Johnson soft Brexit

Or

2. By exposing the vicious destructive cost of a Johnson hard Brexit

Either way means next leader can only be a remainer.

From the responses its clear people have not thought this thru.

An opposition whether they have a policy to rejoin or not (likely not) simply cannot politically critique Johmson's Brexit from a Brexit POV.

It wont work. It wouldn't be credible.
It would pre-program defeat.

Only way a pro Brexit Labour leader makes any sense is if you believe that not only will Brexit be reasonably good for UK, but also beneficial for working class Labour supporters.

Otherwise you'd repeat same mistake that got us into this mess.
You cant out Brexit the Tories.

Away from the noise of Brexit the EU is on the verge towards enshrining carbon neutrality & the easily most careful environmental regulations in the world.

Post Brexit UK cannot escape this particularly in sectors in car manufacture.

Johnson will cave in to these...

Johnson won’t do this because he’s a great friend of the environment or because he’s turning his back on EU for Trump. He’ll do it as the North that voted him in and major companies will simply force him too.

The US won’t be that upset either as it uses UK to sell to EU.

This exit poll can only mean one thing - Labour have lost significant Northern & Midland seats.

There simply weren't enough southern seats to win for Conservatives.

Do you want to know the hilarious part about the British election? Boris Johnson, a man who apparently hates the poor, is defeating a socialist opposition party in former mining towns.

Anyone would think there's a fundamental disconnect between the elite and the working class.
Probably the biggest result we'll see all night. The British Conservative Party has just defeated the opposition socialist party in the constituency of Blythe Valley, a former *mining* town and *working class* heartland. Even the candidate looked surprised he won.
"The biggest Conservative Party majority since 1935".

To underscore the importance of Blyth Valley, the Labour Party has held the seat since it was formed in 1950.

November 1st, and we’re still in the #EU thanks entirely to the @Conservatives (Brexit means #Brexit, Deal or No Deal, Do or Die, No Ifs No Buts, blah blah) who have been in power every day since the referendum. They could have taken us out at any time, but they chose not to.
@Conservatives The #Tories brazenly reneged on the core promise of their last manifesto, and they’ve got the nerve to behave as if it’s not their fault. It is entirely their fault that the UK is still in the #EU after more than three years. It was entirely in their hands after the referendum.

Have you heard of #Hotelling’s Law? In a two party system, it says that you get most votes by minimising the political distance between the parties. It’s worked well in the past, but it’s about to bring an end to both #Labour and the #Tory party. 1/n

Hotelling’s law worked really well for Tony #Blair. #Thatcher had moved the Tory party to the right, so #NewLabour had an opportunity to increase its vote share by also moving rightwards. 2/n
Politics had shifted. Both parties held broadly similar policies. Blair’s political stance, although to the left of Thatcher’s, was much further right than any Labour leader previously (or since). Labour was able to capture ground that the Tories had left unguarded. 3/n
