Does anyone serious believe activist judges appointed by Hillary Clinton wouldn't have granted the request of a violent criminal for review?

Think this ruling obviously further makes my point. The Fifth Circuit majority—1 Reagan, 1 Trump appointee—simply pointed to a SCOTUS ruling in July, which was related.

Neither law, nor a SCOTUS ruling, stopped liberal district and circuit judge activism.
