THREAD on Fragile Turkish Ultra Nationalism and Genetics:

1) A common “insult” I get from Turks on Twitter is how my ancestors were raped by there’s. Apparently rape is something to be proud about for these Turks. But let’s look at Greek and Turkish DNA, and see the truth.
2) A DNA test reviewed by the Institutional Review Board of the University of Washington & the ethical committees of many hospitals hospitals found today’s Greek have near interrupted connection to Ancient Greece, as far back Bronze Age Minoan civilization nature.com/articles/ejhg2…
3) Although the Ottomans ruled over the Greeks for hundreds of years, there was little intermarriage between the Christian Greek and Muslim Turkish populations which resulted in the children identifying as Greek.
4) So it leads to the question on why so many Turks in Turkey, including national hero Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Sultan wannabe Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, look nothing like the Turks found in Central Asia and Altai, the original homeland of the Turks, like seen in the photos below.
4) The Turks were a ruling minority who absorbed much of the local people into their language and identity, successfully. For eg. if a Christian Greek and a Muslim Turk married and had children, the children by Islamic and Ottoman law had to identify as Turks and be Muslim.
5) This is why Turks in Western Turkey, especially those originally from cities like Izmir/Smyrna, look almost identical to Greeks. This is a fact that founding father of Turkey, Atatürk, knew and was paranoid that people would reconnect with their Greek/Armenian identity.
6) Atatürk, himself born in the Greek city of Thessaloniki and a crypto-Jew, created the motto: "How happy is the one who says I am a Turk!"/"Ne mutlu Türküm diyene!" which students of all religions and ethnicity were forced to recite at school everyday until 2013.
7) The paranoia of not being a "pure Turk" is so strong that home DNA based testing kits are banned in Turkey. The moment Turks begin testing themselves, this is the moment their ultra nationalistic fever & hatred towards Greeks and Armenians will end. Erdoğan does not want this.
8) Erdoğan, himself with ancestry from the previously Georgian-majority city of Rize, engages in such ultra nationalistic fever of being a "pure Turk" that accusses Istanbul mayor İmamoğlu of being Greek because he's from a neighboring city.
9) On the one hand Erdoğan pushes the propaganda of a "pure Turk," but also accuses many of his political rivals of being crypto-Greeks/Armenians etc. This is why Erdoğan does not allow home based DNA testing because the moment he does that, he cannot weaponize ultra-nationalism.
10) However, there are now countless videos easily searchable on YouTube of diaspora Turks doing genetic tests and being surprised that they are 50% or more Iranian, Greek, Armenian, Georgian etc.
11) Now if someone wants to identify as Turk despite being a mish mash of many groups, I couldn't care. My problem is when the myth of being a "pure Turk" is weaponized against minorities in Turkey or against Turkey's neighbors, as well as rape insults.
12) However, despite decades of Turkification and propaganda, as well as banning home based genetics testing, many people in Turkey are rediscovering their Greek and Armenian roots, and are embracing it. Some are also converting back to Christianity.
13) I myself am in communication with people from the Pontus region in Turkey on the Black Sea who have recently rediscovered their Pontic Greek roots. Some of them are proud Turks and Greeks and have converted back to Christianity. I teach some of them Greek through Skype.
14) There is a despicable pride that some Turks have for their ancestors being rapists. They need to be careful that they are not the descendants of the criminal and unholy act of rape that they are so proud their ancestors committed, they might get a shock and see they're Greek!
*uninterrupted
15) If anybody wants to help teach Greek to these people in Pontus who have recently discovered they're Greek, please tell me! Especially if you're a Pontic Greek speaker, this is more important, since I do not speak this dialect or have ancestry from there.
16) AKP Mayor Hayrettin Güngör of Kahramanmaraş was filmed as he told a woman “we made you Muslim” after learning that she was from the formerly Greek province of Trabzon in Pontus in Black Sea Turkey.

Why did he say that?

17) Tayfun Atay from Cumhuriyet newspaper: “I was advised in a friendly manner not to admit that I am a Georgian. What about those who risk learning they are of Armenian ancestry. Just think: You think you are a red-blooded Turk but turn out to be a pure-blood Armenian."
18) "Perhaps two million Turks have Armenian grandmothers. But they are supposed to believe that the genocide never happened."

independent.co.uk/voices/turkey-…
19) "The final blow in the tragic process of Turkification of the Ottoman Greek population was during the 1913-1923 Greek Genocide, in which many Greeks, especially women & children, were forced to convert to Islam. Those who refused were killed or exiled." gatestoneinstitute.org/15321/turkey-i…
20) The Janissaries were an elite corps of Ottoman slaves made up of kidnapped young Christian boys, usually Greek or Slavic, who were forced to converted to Islam and were Turkified. This is another major reason why some Turks today have significant Slavic features.
