Ppl thought my mom should abort me bc biracial families were rare at the time. "What about the child?" was a popular refrain. Well, I am the the child ppl asked "What about the child?" about& my life was hard growing up but I certainly enjoyed being alive & continue to do so
I put myself thru college, married a nice boy & we have two lovely children, who also presumably enjoy being alive. I've traveled, enjoyed an eclectic career path, volunteered, made good friends...my life has been full&certainly worth living. What about the child?...
Well ok...what about the child? What about the adult that child will become and the children that adult will bear, and the children they in turn will bear? What is the measure of a life worth living? Comfort? Wealth? Pain-free? That's not even a life, it's just an existence.
Ppl make all kinds of weird justifications for abortion but the weirdest are "it's in the best interest of the kid to kill the kid before they get hurt" and "kids are a handful so sometimes you have to kill them bf they get in the way" are two of the weirdest.
Every person has dignity, in the womb or out. None of us can predict how any one life will turn out and how dare any of us try. What about the child? Well, here I am. Those of you who think I should have died to spare my mother the pain of raising a biracial child - look at me.
What about you? What about your life? Do you have any guarantee that it will be without struggle or pain or discomfort in the coming years? You don't. Does that mean you should end your life just in case? It's easy to apply that standard to a baby you'll never see. But it's gross
I explore this argument "what about the child?" more in my #JLTY podcast. Listen here. open.spotify.com/episode/4w8XEe…
