Wow. @benthompson wrote a bold defense of Facebook this morning. I could pick apart much of it but curious about his skipping impact from data laws considering majority of Facebook’s data collection happens when not using its products and CFO’s warning. Ben, can you reconcile?
Facebook, more than any, is fighting off privacy & data protection laws globally including antitrust investigations now frequently bridging into data policy (see Germany Federal Cartel Office, CMA UK, state AGs, findings/questions et al). It’s been heightened in their 10k risks.
In theory, any change and risk creates opportunity. If that’s all it is but then fine but my take is the piece way overlooks the downward pressure due to new privacy laws still creeping towards enforcement considering data is the core asset to Facebook’s ad business. Cheers.
