2) for any WHO haters out there - I donā€™t think many of you know what they do to help the world. No org is perfect, but WHO go where nobody else goes (to stop Ebola outbreaks in Africa so that it doesnā€™t come to US), and braving indescribable hardships to stop epidemics. Be nice.
3) if your issues are with Tedros, then take it up with him. Donā€™t fault or demean the 7000 hardworking ground staffers and countless more contractors who labor in 150 local country offices around the world to fight HIV, Ebola, bird flu, human flu, STDs, cancer, and malnutrition!

Remember the #diamondprincesscruise? Japan Cruise Ship Finds More Cases: nearly doubling to more than 130 the number of people on the vessel who have contracted the disease. Risks are mounting that the virus could spread in the confined spaces of the ship. bloomberg.com/news/articles/ā€¦
2) Diamond Princess šŸš¢ Ship is now the highest concentration of coronavirus cases outside China. Experts say that quarantining people on a ship is probably just about the worst idea.
3) wow, 30% (136) of all 439 Diamond Princess ship šŸ›³ passengers tested positive for the #coronavirus. If we extrapolate to 3000+ passengers, even if % is lower, we are talking about close to potentially 1000 at risk of testing positive for the šŸ¦ . Letā€™s hope this wonā€™t be true.

This is a thread about the importance of overlay journals.

Let me give the punchline:

This article publication in @OJ_Astro about 10ā‚¬.

In normal journals publication costs 3800-5000ā‚¬.

This is a difference of 7.6 Gā‚¬/year.
This sum equals the salaries of 150 000 postdocs per year.

It equals the annual cost of of building about 15 Large Hadron Colliders -the largest experiment in the history of humanity- or its successor. (For details of the cost, see math.columbia.edu/~woit/wordpresā€¦ )
This sum is given by scientific libraries annually to publishers in exchange for services that can be done at less than 1% of the cost.

Let me explain how this works, why scientific institutions do this, why these sums go to waste - and why #OpenAccess alone is not the answer.
