they have mythologized this made-up fantasy of ronald reagan and tip oneill huddling and coming up with mush. nobody is more in love with this fantasy than chris matthews, who references it constantly. "tip and the gip."
consider the civil rights act. sure there was legislative give and take but mlk and the movement didn't compromise on the fundamental assertion of human equality. it was all or nothing.
compromising with the gop of 20-30 years ago was kind of silly, and considering its current state as a cult combined with some taliban/al qaeda type stances, even dumber.
