#China's Confucius Institutes are a BIG part of what's being funded on US college campuses. 70% of schools that received funding from the CCP/China failed to properly report that funding. 
Confucius Institutes were literally proclaimed a "weapon" by the former Minister of Propaganda of the CCP/China.
They've also received hundreds of millions of dollars in funding from Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
I also think foreign countries funding US colleges is a BIG reason why freedom of speech is under assault on campuses.

BTW, China isn't only doing this in the US and not only in colleges.
Just last July, China bought up United Kingdom-based CATS Colleges - a group of private schools across the UK, US, Canada, and China.

The CCP also set up a bunch of what they claimed were exchange programs on campuses, but what they were doing was directing students to set up Communist Party cells on campuses.

Just 2 weeks ago, these people, including the Chair of Harvard's Chemistry & Chemical Biology Dept, were charged with aiding the CCP. The Harvard Chair failed to report that he simultaneously a "Strategic Scientist" at #Wuhan University of Tech.
Texas A&M found that more than 100 faculty members were taking money from the CCP/China.
