Kanyakumari Tamilnadu the southern tip of mainland India .Devi kanyakumari is also known as Shree Bala Vadra or Shree Bala.

According to Purana lord Bhramha had granted a boon to Banasura that he would only killed by a Kumari or virgin.
After getting the boon Banasura conquered the the TRILOKA & stated harassing Devatas and Rishis.
Frustrated Devatas prayed to ADISHAKTI,the mother goddess.

Please with the prayer Goddess appeared before them as a young girl.But it is a fact th8 whichever incarnation Adishakti took she do penance to rejoin with Mahadev .Hence Kumari devi did penance to marry Lord Shiva .

Lord Shiva agreed and marrige was fixed on auspicious hour before dawn.
Narada realised that if the marriage took placed then Kanyakumari devi will no longer remain Virgin.

Narada was prompted by Devata played a trick.The bridegroom's party started their journey from Suchindram.Narada assumed the form of rooster & waited in Vazhukkamparai.when the marriage party reached at this place Narada crowed aloud
In hearing this Lord Shiva thought this was

Dawn and the auspicious hour had passed.Hence returned to Suchindram
Meanwhile goddess kanyakumari dressed in bridal attire was waiting for lord Shiva.As the bridegroom's party didn't arrived she became disappointed & Vowed to remain Virgin.

She scattered all the food
items kept for marriage which turned into sand and pabbles resembling rice and other item.
The multicolored sand found in Kanyakumari sea shore attribute to this incident.

After that Devi Kanyakumari killed Banasur in a fierce battle.
Devi is still waiting for lord Shiva with the hope that one day he will unite with her.
