Should we be confident of the official statistics on coronavirus cases and deaths in India? Unfortunately - no. Thread:
Just 77% of deaths in India are registered, and just 22% of these were medically certified. That's....shockingly few.
Doctors are more likely to get the cause of death wrong than right and this was truly shocking to me. (Many similar studies)
The Registrar General of India began to collaborate with the Toronto-based Centre for Global Health Research to do household surveys + doctor reviews to better determine causes of death. It showed huge gaps in what we thought.
However, we've had no new estimates from the RGI since 2013. What we have is grounds to be deeply suspicious of official data on causes of death. All of that in my piece today here: livemint.com/news/india/if-…
