#Covid_19 -- 03-06: Who are the 197 people deceased in #Italy since the #CoronavirusOutbreak ?

According to the data released today by the ISS (Istituto Superiore della Sanità), the average age of deceased patients is 81 years.

There are 20 years of difference between the average age of the deceased and that of virus-positive patients. Most of the deaths - 42.2% - occurred in the age group 80 to 89 years; 32.4% of the deaths 70-79; 8.4% 60-69; 2.8% 50-59 and 14.1% over 90 years of age.
Women who died after contracting the virus are older than men. The median age for women is 83.4, the median age for men is 79.9.

The majority of patients who died after testing positive for Coronavirus are men.
In more than two thirds of the cases, dead patients had three or more pre-existing pathologies: the average number of pathologies observed is 3.4. More precisely: 15.5% of the sample had no pathologies, or had only one; 18.3% had 2; 67.2% had 3 or more pathologies.
Hypertension was present in 74.6% of the sample, followed by ischemic heart disease (70.4%) and diabetes mellitus (33.8%). In most of these cases, the virus occurred in organisms not strong enough to react adequately and was most likely a contributing cause of death.
In other words: it contributed by causing interstitial pneumonia with great respiratory damage, weakening of an already particularly fragile organism due to a preexisting disease.
Epidemiological studies conducted so far showed that the risk of death increases with age (for those over 80 it reaches 14.8%) and due to preexisting medical conditions, according to variable risk percentages:
+ 10.5% for cardiac patients; + 7.3% for diabetics; + 6.3% for those suffering from chronic respiratory diseases; + 6% for those with hypertension; up to + 5.5% for patients with cancer.
The president of ISS, Silvio Brusaferro, explained that these data "confirm the observations made so far in the rest of the world, particularly the fact that the elderly with pre-existing diseases are more at risk. . .
. . . These are very fragile people, who often live in close contact with one another, and whom we must protect as much as possible.”
