#COVID19 #ethics thread: The hardest problem to solve in Europe/US now is an ethical one. From the public health perspective, China & South Korea showed that containment measures work. What still eludes public awareness is the moral responsibility that everyone has towards others
We need to send a very clear and simple message: we need to behave in a certain way not because we feel personally at risk or because it's imposed on us from above, but because we can help reduce the risk for everyone, especially the most vulnerable.
We need to control our behavior because otherwise we put our most vulnerable neighbors at risk: the older ones, the already sick, those who cannot protect themselves from #COVID19 for whatever reason. And we also need to do it to allow medical personnel to cope with the emergency
Slowing down the spread of #COVID19 is also valuable, as it contributes to avoid overloading an already drained healthcare system. Staying at home is the most ethical and altruistic thing you can do right now.
Violating directives (eg social distancing) is unethical because it puts the weakest at risk. Government decrees can put a band-aid here and there but the ultimate responsibility is not of the State but of each person. Only when this problem is clear can we hope to solve it.
In fact, as of today in Codogno, the first Italian city to be put in total lockdown, has not registered any new infections for the first time. I say it again: containment measures work!
