There are guides for constructing children's toys and wicker chairs, right next to guides for making your own ammunition.
Want to learn how to make a stream engine? This has you covered. Want a review of the movie Taxi Driver, which the author of this was pretty sure would be one of the last films ever made? It has that too.

This is the greatest magazine ever published.

It is a lovely gray Saturday in Portland and I am on my way to what was a scheduled KKK rally. Back in January local Grand Wizard or some such stupid title Steven Howard announced a gathering in this all caps message.
Pop Mob (Popular Mobilization) a local antifascist org, planned a large dance party as a counter action.

As of right now I am hearing that the KKK has called off their rally. Possibly because no one was going to show. Possibly as a distraction.
Local antifascists report extreme concern that groups of right wing demonstrators, including some of the folks behind the Cider Riot attack last may, might wind up patrolling around and attacking people.

My hope is that this will be a boring day and thread.

It is 7 AM in the city of Richmond, Virginia on the day of what I will be calling the Big Gun Clusterfuck.

Initially a rally by self-admitted 2nd Amendment extremist group VCDL, it has become a lightning rod for militias across the country.
Most credible estimates I've seen so far suspect 10-15,000 attendees. However VCDL says they might get up to 120,000. This seems unlikely to me.

The FBI has of course carried out several arrests of members of The Base who planned God knows what. Threats hang in the air.
I'm gonna shower and grab coffee so it may be a little while before I get into the street in a meaningful way.

This will be a thread about Bolivia.

Earlier today, I received a request to retweet this video, purportedly of a pro-Morales mayor who was assaulted in the street by anti-government protesters. The person who sent me this video saw it as more evidence of a coup.
The video is unsettling. But it, and the accompanying text, provided no context. Not even a name.

I mentioned this to the person who sent it to me, and they provided me with a link to this Independent article:

The article names the mayor as Patricia Arce, and corroborates that she was dragged through the street, forced to resign and adds that the town hall was lit on fire.

But it also notes that the people who did this to Patricia Arce were calling her "murderer".

We talked last month about how it's impolite to tag authors directly in negative reviews. It was a whole thing. It went on for a while. But part of why it's impolite is not "it might hurt someone's feelings." It's because the social contract says authors can't respond.
Why can't we respond? Because if we're remotely successful at our jobs, our virtual "weight" is probably substantially greater than the reviewers. And targeting someone for the crime of not liking one of my books is unfair and unkind.

I just had an epiphany: #beautiful has become my new favorite word. That may seem strange given my circumstances. In June 2017 I was diagnosed with incurable stage IV #lungcancer.
I naively thought that maybe my lifetime of being a health and fitness junkie would insulate me from such a medical fate. Wrong. And So here I am, fifty-one years old and not sure how much time I have left on earth. I know I could, or maybe should, feel angry, cheated, jaded.
But I don't. I have this epiphany that my new favorite word is beautiful and I'm not sure why. There is nothing beautiful about what I've gone through since my diagnosis--lots of physical and emotional distress to be sure. But yet, I keep find
