#Covid19 sitrep from @WHO is up (numbers as of 23.59 Geneva time Saturday):

@WHO I should note that while I wrote in my thread today, that WHO’s tally would likely pass 300,000 cases today, we’re not quite there yet (may be a weekend reporting issue too). But the point of course still holds that these milestones are coming faster and faster.

Many people now pointing to old articles (incl. one from me) saying: It’s all there. And others saying: No-one could have predicted #covid19. So I just want to be very clear about what I personally as a journalist covering this beat for years expected and didn‘t expect. A thread
I expected a virus to go global, probably respiratory, probably from bats. Because experts told me. @PeterDaszak in my 2013 article: „right now in China, there are bats carrying a virus that can directly infect people, and cause another SARS pandemic“ sciencemag.org/news/2013/10/b…
The scenario I thought about the most was a virus that is very deadly (something like 10 percent mortality say) but not super transmissible. The most likely alternative seemed a mild virus that spread rapidly. We probably wouldn’t be able to do much about that.

The US has now surpassed every other country in the number of reported #covid19 cases. Of course it has a bigger population than many other hard-hit countries, but this is a sad milestone. And things will get worse before they get better. (Numbers are Johns Hopkins dashboard).
No matter how long I live, I don‘t think I will ever get over how the US with all its wealth and technological capability and academic prowess sleepwalked into the #covid19 desaster that is unfolding.
So many warnings from some of the brightest minds in epidemiology and virology. So much smart advice on what to do and how to prepare from people who have planned for this and helped other countries beat terrible epidemics. So many opportunities missed, so many lives wasted.

Unlike #USA+#Europe, #Pakistan is right next door to two epicenters of #COVIDー19 spread: #China & #Iran. China was initially late but later took impressive steps to contain the spread, incl quarantining #Pakistani citizens. Unlike Iran where Pk citizens visited in large numbrs.
What steps did PM #ImranKhan take for a #CoronaFreePakistan when it was obvious #Pakistan faced #COVIDー19 spread threat from #Iran; & when it became obvious that almost every neighbor incl #Iraq+#Turkey+#Gulf traced 1st cases to Iran & when #Tehran failed to warn neighbors?

Picking up from yesterday:

As stated before:

Finally authorities are putting Mazandaran province on quarantine: only fuel and food trucks are allowed. This late, its effectiveness will be limited.

The same authorities have had argued for quarantine to be "non-scientific" and "from middle ages".

#COVID-19: It’s possible to get infected a 2nd time. People recovered by their own immune system, but the meds they use are damaging their heart, and when they get it the 2nd time, the antibody makes it worse, and they die of sudden heart failure.

I don't find this unexpected. We had similar results in the study of SARS. Challenge with the virus after vaccination actually made the resulting disease worse. One theory is this may be due to an overactive immune response due to a cytokine storm.
What I find really troubling is doctors in China had to report this anonymously to avoid communist censorship. We are not getting the whole story here. Keep in mind we don't yet know how many cases this involves and we'll have to wait for more case studies in other countries.

Think someone is lying to you?

First check to see if they bothered to add any variability whatsoever in the model they are using to supposedly report actual numbers from a complex system.

The mortality rate they want you to report is the - 0 day rate: Today's Confirmed Death total minus Today's Confirmed Case total.

This has not varied outside of 1/10th of 1% in the last 5 prints.

But even a minor adjustment of a few days in the mortality rate paints an entirely different picture
