A major mistake in how the discourse around coronavirus developed: The idea that it was basically between death or barely knowing you had it. It causes a lot of suffering and takes up healthcare resources, and the idea we could return to 'normal' in its midst seems 100% bonkers.
Obviously plenty of ppl knew this was the case from the beginning, but a kind of vague narrative formed that made it seem like the young and healthy wouldn't even really notice there was a pandemic.
The most extreme version of this hardened into in some quarters of the right "send everyone back to work and let the olds fend for themselves." But the over-65 ppl saying that aren't being selfless! They're putting everyone else at risk too!
That false choice was always wrong, but it was wrong in more ways than it looked to a lot of ppl, I guess is what I'm saying.
