On Jan 1, 2020, NY bail reform ended pretrial jail for misdemeanors & nonviolent felonies. Kept 1000s charged w/ lowlevel offenses home w/ families, jobs, & free from Coronavirus. @NYGovCuomo & @NYSenDems want to give judges power to jail large categories of these cases again.
2 months of police, prosecutors, GOP lawmakers, Bill de Blasio, NYPD Chief, & White supremacists, partnering w/ a willing sensationalist media lying & fearmongering over a handful of cases is all it took for @NYGovCuomo & @NYSenDems to cave. Not based on reason. Just politics.
If Democratic lawmakers and Governor Cuomo turn their backs on communities devastated in favor of the same racist fear and red meat fed to the public for the last half century to create mass incarceration, it will be one of the biggest betrayals in history. Of reason. Of people.
