4pm news today: Rikers Island has the highest Coronavirus infection rate in the world.

7pm news today: @NYGovCuomo & @NYSenDems are in final stage negotiations to kill just-passed bail reform to send thousands more to Rikers.

It doesn’t make sense because it doesn’t make sense.
On Jan 1, 2020, NY bail reform ended pretrial jail for misdemeanors & nonviolent felonies. Kept 1000s charged w/ lowlevel offenses home w/ families, jobs, & free from Coronavirus. @NYGovCuomo & @NYSenDems want to give judges power to jail large categories of these cases again.
2 months of police, prosecutors, GOP lawmakers, Bill de Blasio, NYPD Chief, & White supremacists, partnering w/ a willing sensationalist media lying & fearmongering over a handful of cases is all it took for @NYGovCuomo & @NYSenDems to cave. Not based on reason. Just politics.
If Democratic lawmakers and Governor Cuomo turn their backs on communities devastated in favor of the same racist fear and red meat fed to the public for the last half century to create mass incarceration, it will be one of the biggest betrayals in history. Of reason. Of people.

My son is starting virtual pre-k in 3 minutes and this makes me supremely sad.
Update: He’s all smiles seeing his teachers via zoom.
All the students are muted to manage sound. Which makes sense. But my son keeps trying to say little things to his teachers & he’s getting sad they can’t hear him. Or he’ll crack a little joke his classmates might have laughed at. And they can’t hear him.

The number of US cases seems to double every 3-4 days. Thus:

There are 330 million people in the US.

Assume #coronavirus infection rate of 66%.

—> 220 million infected.

Of those infected, assume 20% will need hospitalization

—> 44 million people hospitalized.

Of those hospitalized, assume 20% succumb.

—> 8.8 million people dead.
If US cases keep doubling every four days, then by mid April is when the real crisis will start.

Early May will be when real panic sets in, as the number of deaths become too great.

Total social breakdown will begin by early-June.

I truly hope that I am completely wrong.

Why India's a problem: Only 500 people a day were being tested up to now - in a country of 1.3 billion with very uneven health infrastructure. Revised plans would test only 2 million. Social distancing v.v. hard to do in urban slums. icmr.nic.in/sites/default/…

The COVID-19 infection, however, has largely spared Taiwan, despite the island's proximity to the virus's epicenter.
3. When the outbreak first started in January, some experts predicted that Taiwan would have the highest number of cases outside of mainland China. However, while mainland China has had over 80,000 COVID-19 cases to date, Taiwan has kept its number of confirmed cases below 50.
