Call it "corona-federalism": the coronavirus pandemic is surfacing a distinctively Trumpian form of federalism, & it's rotten to its core.

Here are its key features. /1
1st, "corona-federalism" blames the states for failures of the federal government under Trump.

"We are a backup for them," said Trump.

So much for "the buck stops here"!

2nd, "corona-federalism" rewards states whose leaders suck up to Trump & punishes states whose leaders urge essentials for their citizens.

3rd, "corona-federalism" indulges states privileging their own citizens over other states' citizens.

In a crisis, national leadership--real leadership--unites our nation.

It brings together "these United States," as @BarackObama liked to say (h/t @AndBurt).

But Trump?

He divides Americans, & pits them against each other.

US deaths from COVID-19 will surpass US deaths on 9/11 Sunday or Monday, if this 👇 trajectory holds.

But there are key differences in how to think about responsibility & leadership on the part of the US Presidents who faced these tragedies. /1
First, 9/11 was an intelligence failure. But COVID-19 wasn’t—it was a policy failure.

Trump received astonishingly prescient strategic & even tactical intelligence warning about COVID-19. He then failed utterly to act.

That’s not an intelligence but a policy failure. /2
Second, 9/11 was a collective failure of imagination: US leadership failed to internalize & act as if something like 9/11 could happen.

But COVID-19 was an individual failure of imagination: only Trump himself refused to believe what the previous admin & intel warned about. /3

Trump's supporters have long insisted that Trump's crazy rhetoric can be distinguished from Trump's policies.

As @DKThomp summed up their view in 2018, "Ignore the words, heed the substance."

But coronavirus demolishes that distinction. /1
Trump has said wild--at times downright false--things about many issues over the past 3 years: Afghanistan, China, Syria, the US-Mexico border, veterans' benefits . . . the list goes on.

A president's words matter. Trump's critics are right when they assail his misstatements. /2
But, on many issues, there is a way for Trump's supporters to say: "Ignore the words, heed the substance."

Trump critics call it hypocrisy (because it is!), but Trump in fact doesn't always do what he says.

That leaves policies his supporters like & words they try to ignore. /3

THREAD on the Trump Campaign's new lawsuit against the NYTimes:

The most important thing to know about this suit is that, however crazy you've heard it is, it's actually crazier.

Let me explain. /1
1st, the suit claims "harm caused by The Times’ intentional false reporting."

But the suit's all about 1 article--an opinion piece, not news reporting.

That's not to say opinion pieces can't in theory be defamatory. But it's eyebrow-raising, especially calling it "reporting" /2
2nd, the suit claims NYT "published the statements at issue knowing that they were false at the time of publication."

NYT published the statements in March 2019.

The suit claims their falseness became clear w/ the Mueller Report's publication in April 2019.

So: time travel? /3
