I met him when I took this picture.

An older man, sitting on a bench, next to his parked bicycle. He warned to keep the sunlight out of my camera, and I explained that I used the willow tree on my right for that.

Soon he started talking about his life, and local history.
Born in 1944, the scars of the war were still fresh when he grew up.

His father had unwillingly been involved in the execution of ten men that had tried to escape to the liberated south of the Netherlands.

He had been forced to drive them to their execution place.
A armed soldier made sure he would do it, and more soldiers were in the back of the truck.

His father lived with the frustration that nobody did anything to liberate them, it would have been possible.

When he was eight, the dikes broke. Nearly 2000 people drowned in Zeeland.
He remembered surviving on the roof of their house. The sea was meters high all around them, and there was the cold, and the darkness.

He spoke about how long it took before the dikes were finally rebuilt, and the water pumped out to the sea again.
He spoke about this field, which had been a skating rink when we had real winters, and where tulips were grown in springtime.

Since a few years it has been given back to nature. He liked to sit on this bench and enjoy the different shades of green.
He said that at 76, he must be now in the first stages of dying, but then admitted that there should still be some valuable time left for him.

I walked back home, without shaking hands, we follow the covid-guidelines. Something else that has changed in this village.
