Image

In the century since its invention, plastic has become a #Pollution nightmare. Much is designed to be used just once. And much is. Yet billions are being invested in making more.

📢 Our special on #PlasticPollution and #Fossifuels is live! 📢
Despite #ClimateGoals set around the world, including increases in #SolarPower and other #RenewableEnergy, the fossil fuel sector is not about to turn its back on hydrocarbons. It has seen a beacon of hope in plastics, an industry to which it already has deep connections.
#SingleUsePlastic, like this shampoo sachet, is what fossil fuel companies are betting on to secure future profits.

This Kentish #plover pair incubated a nest of two eggs 🥚🥚 for 22 days, until it was preyed upon by a fox 🦊. But the fox left a strange "egg" 🧐 inside the nest. The female has continued to incubate it for weeks. In #albuferadevalencia
At the beginning of May 2021 the Kentish plover female laid 2 eggs. 🧐 Can you spot them in this photo? Some pairs are able to camouflage them very effectively.

On Saturday, I led 30 young Community Recycling Champions to observe the #EarthDay2021 as one of the strategies in implementing the #MissionZeroPlastic initiative in #KwaraState. The CRCs #CleanUpTanke and recovered 211 Kg (5,908)

#Recycle4Education #AREAixTCCF
5,908 #Pet #plastic were recovered from Item7, Tanke Oke - Odo to Bovas Filling Station, Tanke (3.2 Km and 7 mins walk, thanks to @googlemaps).

This shows the high level of #plasticpollution in Tanke alone.

Thanks to all #volunteers that participated in the clean-up.

Just imagine the volume of #plastic we would have recovered if we covered the whole Tanke, #Ilorin

The #MissionZeroPlastic Initiative is proudly sponsored by the #CocaColaFoundation @TheCocaColaCo and implemented by @areai4africa @EcowarriorsNG

To achieve our ambition of a 2% increase in #tree canopy cover across #Cambridge, we need businesses & residents to plant #trees on privately owned land to accompany the 2,000 trees being planted on @camcitco public land.

Here's a thread of how to plant, the Cambridge way:
Step 1 of 12: (If planting in grass) Cut away turf using spade
Step 2 of 12: Dig a pit to accommodate your new #tree, ensuring it is wide and deep enough for the bare roots or root ball of your tree

An amazing turn out today, thank you all so much! 😊 I think I counted 33 bags in total collected in just 2 hours! That’s 33 bags of plastic saved from entering our water systems 🐟🐟😊😊
We saw 8 masks, 3 bottles of wee, a poo filled sock 🤢 a tyre and way too many costa and Starbucks cups. We even managed to collect 2 sacks of fully recyclable litter and put them for recycling. Fabulous job everyone!!!!
Thank you @Lisaandjamie1 you are litter heroes! Especially after retrieving that tyre! 😊👏👏👏

If you’re heading to Bangsaen Beach this weekend you might want to turnaround now and go home. Unless your hotel has a nice swimming pool you won’t be able to swim in the sea due to all the plastic rubbish that has been washed up #Thailand ImageImageImageImage
Further down Bangsaen Beach it’s a bit cleaner, though I’m not sure if it’s advisable to swim in the sea. I saw some glass bottles among the plastic. The weather is stormy at the moment and so most, though not all of the rubbish, is being washed up. #Thailand ImageImageImageImage
Municipal workers are doing a beach clean up but really they are only scratching the surface. You need an army of people here to clean up Bangsaen Beach. But then, the next storm will just wash up even more. It will only stop when humans stop dumping rubbish in waterways ImageImageImageImage

As the 50th anniv. of #EarthDay approaches, let’s look now at an image you would NOT have seen on April 22, 1970: the recycling logo.

It’s a story of Escher and environmental hope, of celebrities and greenwashing, of industry manipulation and—spoiler alert--#plasticpollution. Image
It all started soon after the first Earth Day when Gary Anderson, a student at @USC, learned that the Container Corporation of America had launched a contest to design a recycling symbol.
Anderson was a big fan of the Dutch artist M.C. Escher, whose work had become increasingly popular among ecologists and the counterculture. Esher’s pictures—such as this one of birds changing into fish—appeared in Rolling Stone, Ramparts, and the Whole Earth Catalog in 1970. Image

The amount of plastic packaging sent to me in the last 2 months. All from whisky companies and retailers. All of it is theoretically recyclable, yet only 7% of councils will accept it... all now destined for landfill. This has to stop. Image
Seriously, if anyone has any suggestions for what to do with this pile (aside from reuse and pop the bubbles in an effort to calm down) I’m all ears.
PS. Decided to cover this topic in my first column for @Whisky_Magazine #plasticpollution #plasticpackaging Image

Our consumption model is hurting our environment, our physical and mental health. We’re over-using natural resources, exposing children to toxic chemicals in our everyday products, and creating too much waste. This is unsustainable. Thread👇
Humanity lives at credit and consumes resources equal to that of 1.7 planets a year, vs 1.4 a decade ago and 0.8 in 1963. If population and consumption trends continue, this figure will rise to 2 planets by 2030.

The problem is about quantity, quality, and behaviors. We produce too much useless and disposable stuff, using enormous resources, cheap materials and labor, that we often barely use and quickly throw away.…

Plastic always finds a way.

We removed this plastic ring from around the skink's neck in the middle of a forest in Madagascar, 1h walking distance to the nearest human settlement.

I don't think most people realise the extent of #PlasticPollution across the globe.
Over the past years I've been to a handful of places without any system of garbage disposal. There you literally 'take the trash outside'.

This is a common sight in Mutsamudu, #Comoros. All of it is plastic, whether single-use bags or microwave parts.
These places have so many underlying issues that lead to this kind of pollution: a dependency on (packaged) goods for survival, a complete lack of infrastructure that forbids efficient garbage disposal, governments who don't act...

Good question. Here's why treating plastics as one kind of thing in science and activism isn’t useful and can even cause harm.
A thread.
#plasticpollution #plasticspollution
Plastic = many polymers with many associated chemicals. A paper by @ChelseaRochman et al "Rethinking microplastics as a diverse contaminant suite" warns that treating plastics as a single compound misses effects, sources & solutions
Likewise, single-use can include medical plastics, disposable packaging & other items. Conflating them can cause harm. E.g. straw bans: see @DisVisibility on how disabled people use straws to create livable worlds. #suckitableism

Just back from another beach clean event, this one at Chessel Bay Nature Reserve, #Southampton. Thread...
At first sight, things look petty good. But start looking among and under vegetation and it's obvious that #plasticpollution is an issue. Lots of macro-litter, way more than can be collected in a single day..
Doesn't take long to collect a big bag of plastic crap. Only two syringes this time. The plastic fish are soy sauce containers. #plasticpollution
