A few thoughts on last night's #TVDuell between #Merkel and @MartinSchulz: #Thread

#BTW17
Most Germans found #TVDuell boring and criticized lack of any controversy or contest of ideas between the two candidates.
#TVDuell seriously felt like the beginning of coalition talks between @CDU and @spdde. Germans hate that!
Numbers by @civey_de: 73,3% dont want another "grand coalition" between Conservatives and Social Democrats.
Only far left coalition of @spdde, @Die_Gruenen and @dieLinke is more unpopular. Almost 50% view this option as worst possible outcome.
Either way, #TVDuell neglected most important issues. Most opposition politicians pointed out digitalisation/innovation and education.
But security/defence politics was also ignored, as were #BREXIT, #Russia and reform of the #EU.
In short: #TVDuell was a non-debate. Mostly the presenters are to blame for that but also the candidates avoided any serious confrontation.
So, who benefits? Definitely not #Schulz. #Merkel got what she wanted but Germans will increasingly look elsewhere for their political needs
Don't agree that the topics of last night(refugees, integration) will benefit only @AfD_Bund. Germans want answers for future challenges.
My guess: Media coverage of next days will show who will benefit. If narative will hover around "vision for the future", @fdp will get boost
Sum up: I think #TVDuell benefits third parties, not #Merkel or #Schulz. He just lost the election, she just won. Q is coalition partner(s).
