Being overly defensive about an issue automatically makes you biased in your analysis. Denying that #racism is a problem in #Libya is wrong. It is a problem in most if not all societies.
Nevertheless, claiming #slavery is a direct symptom of racism is worse.
Slavery, although motivated by racism, was abolished through legal reform. Racism was not abolished and most probably won't be.
It is 'logical' that in the absence of rule of law & the presence of policies that negatively disrupt migratory flows, slavery COULD reemerge. #Libya
The solution to #migration and #slavery therefore involves tackling different dimensions:
- Short-term: policy changes acknowledging #EU's interception at sea is illegal
- Medium-term: improving #Libya's economic & security capacity as transit state
- Long-term: tackling racism

There is a growing trend to implement development projects oriented towards women economic empowerment (WEE) in #Libya. This is great because it paves the way for changing the cultural paradigm of Libyan society and promotes inclusion of #women in other areas. 1/10
But there are also opportunities/risks that should be observed/mitigated when implementing such projects, given the #Libya-n environment. I’ll try and compile a few here that I hope will be observed by both donors and implementing orgs. 2/10
First, you need to make sure the idea for the project originates from the woman and that she takes full ownership of it. Just suggesting things for her to do is NOT economic empowerment and will have 0 impact, it is advising and will eventually result in failure. 3/10

Second, #14Amendment was one of three emancipation-related amendments to the #Constitution, designed to grant citizenship to former slaves and their children. The congressional record shows nobody believed 600,000 Americans died to give Congress the chance to open the borders.

The instability in Tripoli served Haftar in several ways: 1) By highlighting the weakness of Serraj's GNA/PC and compounding shortages in water & electricity etc. the instability in Tripoli eroded what little popular support remained for a GNA/PC leadership despised by Haftar
2) The attack on Tripoli started by the Kani Brigade created a new push for political and fiscal reforms of the GNA similar to those Haftar demanded after the oil terminal stand-off ended in July but which since then lost momentum in August as the GNA and the Central Bank stalled

For the last 24 hours I've been texting & calling with refugees in Libya. 500 are apparently stuck in a Tripoli prison w/o food & water after heavy fighting broke out two days ago. They say their guards ran away, leaving them alone.
These refugees are men, women & children. They tried to cross the Mediterranean earlier this year, but were found by Italian boats, who turned them over to the EU-backed Libyan coastguard, who put them in prison. The conditions were already terrible before the fighting started.
Oh the phone earlier I could hear children crying & what sounded like bombing in the distance. The refugees say everyone's incredibly frightened. "We hear machine guns, tanks, big bombs, last night from the roof it was all fire."

🚢⛵️🚤🤔With less NGOs at sea (#Aquarius @MSF_Sea, @openarms_fund), we have seen people being saved from sturdier boats, trawlers arriving directly to 🇮🇹 shores.
The question: do NGOs' search and rescue activities affect how #Libya smugglers send #migrants at sea?
First: TIMING.

Data shows that rubber dinghies were already the most used means of transport in 2015, when NGOs were small minority of rescuers.
It also shows shift to smaller vessels (dinghies + small boats), from 78% to 90%+. But these were already large majority in 2015.
Second: CORRELATION.

Using what yearly data we have available, is there any evidence that NGOs affected the prevalence of unseaworthy rubber dinghies, as compared to sturdier vessels? Well, NOPE. 👇

Racism describes the form of classism that exists in the USA. These things are intertwined and can't be separated. I also don't believe that anyone over the age of 12 who's lived in USA more than a year is unaware that white identity is associated w/ social privilege
I'm not willing to engage in any discourse that doesn't accept as a basic fact of reality that systemic racism has existed in USA since its founding and that Black Americans have been enslaved here far longer than we haven't. 2/
I don't believe that white Americans are unaware of racism or how it operates. It doesn't require having historical analysis or an extensive vocabulary. & I'm frankly just over the farce of it all w/ folks pretending to not be aware 3/
