Important to remember they’re more tolerant for *their* politicians. This is a reaction to Trump and completely about cognitive dissonance.
The truth is, like so many “Constitutionalists,” they’re only concerned with their principles when it helps them, not in universal application.
Also why so many churches have moved from Christ’s gospel to a gospel of wealth or apocalyptic fetishism. All about the personal, not the society.
It’s also worth noting that so much of this comes from the fact that evangelical Christians can be more culturally Christian than religious.
Attendance and group identification, in many places, trumps orthodox. It’s a place to meet people, to uphold traditions, to be a shared subculture.
Actual principles fall by the wayside because tribalism means more than practice of faith, which is more tradition than commandments.
So, when someone they don’t like falls short, say Bill Clinton, they wield those principles they don’t uphold or even really care about. It’s the subculture lashing out.
This is part of why there are so many public hypocrites and charlatans. It’s not about faith, it’s about the culture. Roy Moore, sadly, isn’t that big a departure. And neither is Trump. They publicly claim it, fit the profile, get the benefit of doubt.
I grew up in the church. It was always accepted that members fell short and could be forgiven. Outsiders? They were damned.
That stunning hypocrisy has always been public, it’s just completely obvious now that Trump, a man who is the antithesis of the Christ ideal, is their savior.
