The Senate is voting today on #netneutrality. I have some thoughts about this.
Democracy cannot function without an informed public. #NetNeutrality is important for education, for rural and low-income communities, and for solving the “fake news” problem. nbcnews.com/think/opinion/…

I came across a mention of this think tank report in an old Joan Didion essay, and of course I had to find it immediately. The title alone is amazing, and there are some real gems in there.

Pinchai uses a very weak excuse to defend Project Drafonfly: “We are compelled by our mission [to] provide information to everyone, and [China is] 20 percent of the world's population.”

First, many orgs have to balance cultural values w/int’l markets. This isn’t a new problem & certainly not a new problem for Google. “Balancing cultural values” doesn’t obligate compliance w/every restrictive regime. Google knows this, and it’s disingenuous to claim otherwise.

Gov made legal requests, got warrants. Facebook defended its users against overbroad demands. Civil society spoke out for free speech and assembly. This is the rule of law in action. cnn.com/2017/09/28/pol…
Gov has always had an interest in monitoring social agitators. In America, we balance that interest against the *far more important* interests of free speech, free assembly, and fair political process.
Anything that threatens the fairness and legitimacy of the legal system is a threat to democracy. The rule of law is one of the last tools we have for saving democratic values in the face of un-democratic leaders, in any branch of gov.

Trump & @AjitPaiFCC's resoundingly unpopular repeal of #NetNeutrality *just* went into effect. But dozens of states are fighting back. Substantively, the California bills are the best ones in the country, hands down. But they're in serious danger of getting gutted or voted down.
The bills already passed the California State Senate, despite fierce lobbying from monopoly ISPs like AT&T and Comcast. They're playing dirty, hiring up tons of contract lobbyists in Sacramento and flooding California lawmakers with misinfo-- lies. With lies.

THREAD: At 3pm, the Senate will vote on a resolution to block the FCC’s #NetNeutrality repeal and restore basic protections that prevent companies like Comcast and AT&T from censoring online content, slowing down websites and apps, and charging expensive new fees.
Our work for Internet freedom will continue long after today, but the outcome of this vote will affect the battlefield that we are fighting on for years to come.

#NetNeutrality is a principle, not a concrete thing, like human rights. NN is the principle of an open internet, where service providers don't unfairly block or favor particular content, products, or sites. It levels the playing field for all internet users. Sounds good. 3/

Just in case y’all not getting it. The last time the CDC was told to ban words, the word “blood” was banned during the AIDS crisis & now 30 years later, ppl STILL believe misinformation that word ban caused.

Banning words leads to stigma & discrimination.
In my last job, I worked with HIV+ clients & most of them have had FAMILY MEMBERS & other ppl refuse to let them eat off their plates or drink from cups b/c they thought HIV was spread through saliva.

This word ban broke up families. It traumatized so many ppl.
Word bans affect funding, research, public knowledge, medication, etc.

Where would we be with our knowledge & understanding of HIV now if this ban never existed?
