2 years ago, I found a card in a Paperchase and posted about it on Twitter.

This then led to national headlines for me & the legendary @lemnsissay after the card was removed from Paperchase’s shelves.

Looking back on these events that took place, I have some thoughts… (🧵1/10) ImageImage
When I found this card, I wasn’t shocked. I grew up seeing stereotypes about care experienced people/adoptees throughout the mainstream & particularly in the media.

My community has often been used as the butt of the joke - like in the card I came across in 2020. (🧵2/10)
In recent years, I feel more and more hope that opinions & portrayals of our community are changing; from the John Lewis Christmas Advert, to the 2019 Care Experienced Conference, the work of various charities & orgs like @article_39, and projects like @CareExp_Culture. (🧵3/10) Image

#Advocacy thread.
A key recommendation in the @reviewCSC is for there to be independent, opt-out advocacy.
Implementation of this would be globally ground-breaking and a vg safeguard for children's rights.
#CareReview 🧵 Image
It is confusing, difficult and sometimes traumatic entering care. An #independentadvocate is there to be on the child's side. It is someone to represent their needs and wishes so that they are central in making and reviewing care plans.
Running @whocaresscot I saw firsthand how advocacy was a life-line for people in the most vulnerable situations. It gave them hope and built trust when they saw they were heard.
Having a voice over decisions that affect you is a cornerstone of children's rights.

*New Batman movie spoilers ahead*

So I watched the new Batman movie yesterday and was disgusted at the blatant harmful stereotypes of care experienced people in the movie. I read a bunch of reviews before seeing and so far that I’ve seen, no one is talking about this.
*Spoilers ahead*
It’s well-known that Batman is care experienced - his parents died in a tragic accident and he is raised by their butler Alfred. In the film, it’s told that Catwoman and the villain the Riddler are also care experienced and this motivates them in different ways.
Towards the end, the villain relives his experiences in an orphanage and tells them to Batman as a justification for his graphic and violent serial murdering of several high profile figures in the movie.

We want to create safe and healing spaces for care experienced people to come together. In these spaces we can talk about our care experiences, life in general, & have a space where we are all equal. This is why every first Thursday of the month we hold “Reclaim Gatherings” 👇
Reclaim Gatherings are spaces designed for care experienced people of any age to join and feel safe in. We often have a set discussion topic for each of the gatherings, but recently we’ve found the conversations have an organic narrative and can take on a different direction.
As a collective, we have also decided to host “Reclaim Fun”. These are a safe space for care experienced people to ‘let go’. The focus of the sessions are about having fun.

Details on the first “Reclaim Fun” will be announced soon, so follow @ReclaimCare for the latest updates!

Care experienced people are people of any age who have spent any time within the care system; whether that’s through foster care, residential care homes, adoption, kinship, secure care, or having social work intervention. This is what makes someone 'care experienced'. THREAD 👇
Care day is a national awareness day held in February to celebrate care experienced people. @ReclaimCare was formed in response to the tokenism which our community experienced on these days. Voices of care experienced people were often being lost due to poorly planned campaigns.
On #CareDay21 we decided, in response to National Care Leavers Week, that we wanted to RECLAIM the day for care experienced people from organisations, charities and non #CEP. This led to the creation of our first campaign & manifesto.

Image
