Several important highlights follow

#ChadwickBoseman
2/#ChadwickBoseman was full of grace & strength, keeping this devastating secret from public as he braved chemotherapy & other treatments to battle this disease. Pls understand that the age of onset in his case is unusually young, but we do see #coloncancer more often in Blacks
3/ Rates in adults under age 50 are also on the rise.

As we cope with an unimaginable loss— a literal super-hero— please take a moment to learn about colon cancer risk and screening.

What is colon or rectum cancer?

Cancer can start any place in the body. Cancer that starts in the colon or rectum is called colorectal cancer. It starts when cells in the colon or rectum grow out of control. This makes it hard for the body to work the way it should. @drpenking Image

Chadwick Boseman died from colon cancer at 43.

I am sad that this talented brother lost his earthly life to this disease at such a young age.

Most of us don't know the details of the screening, diagnosis, and treatment journey he endured.

What I do know is that according to the @AmericanCancer, colon cancer screening is recommended starting at age 45.

I also know that Black people suffer disproportionate health inequities related to colon cancer compared to other races/ethnicities.
3/
We suffer these inequities not just because "we don't screen as much," but due to issues with access to care, insurance, public health outreach, and provider bias.

The same factors that drive racial health inequities from #COVID19, #HIV, and numerous other health conditions.

So Chadwick Boseman passed from colon cancer at the age of 43.

I think this is an opportunity for Black healthcare providers to discuss the importance of knowing your family history of disease.

If he was 39 when he was diagnosed that means if he had children, they need to be
screened beginning at age 29 and any siblings he may have should also be screened if they have not been.

The general distrust Black people have for the institutions in this country is warranted. How as a Black healthcare provider do I plan to change this? I’m not sure yet, but
it is my hope that the mere act of seeing a Black doctor walk into their room to treat them will help. I CANNOT wait to champion and advocate for my future patients.

Can a specific metabolic program provoke a cell to become a cancer cell? Focusing mainly on glucose, with some thoughts on fatty acids, and glutamine, we tested the uncoupling of glycolysis and glucose oxidation to induce the transformation from stem cell to cancer cell. 2/
Long ago, Otto Warburg observed that cancer cells perform aerobic glycolysis, but we didn’t know how a cell could control flux from cytosolic glycolysis to mitochondrial glucose oxidation until the transporter was identified…bit.ly/2RDELqe #MPC 3/
