Proponents of private pay health care often claim that countries with multi-payer health care systems (aka private pay + public pay) out-perform Canada šŸ‡ØšŸ‡¦, but keep costs low and still cover everybody equitably. Sounds amazing. Is it true? Not quite. A #BetterMedicare šŸ§µ/1
Like health care systems everywhere right now, Canadaā€™s is struggling. No country is emerging from the pandemic unscathed - whether they have single- or multi- payer health care systems. /2
But we need to be cautious about drawing conclusions from health care systems in other countries. Each country must take into account the legacy of its history, its culture, its politics, and the values of its people. What works in one country may not work in another. /3

On this day, 60 years ago, #Medicare was born in Saskatchewan under the leadership of Premier Tommy Douglas, making it the first universal, comprehensive, single-payer insurance system in North America. AšŸ§µ
The decision was met with fierce opposition from the media, doctors, and medical organizations, including the CPSS, CMA, and AMA. It also led to the infamous doctor's strike that lasted 23 days.

The federal government followed Saskatchewanā€™s example and passed the Medical Care Act in 1966. Within 6 years, all provinces and territories had universal health care.

As someone who opposes Islamophobia, why should I vote strategically for a party that drafted a dog-whistle bill around it or that voted for it, over the NDP who didn't?

As someone who supports labour organizing, why would I vote strategically for a party who doesn't want to strengthen labour laws to support workers during strikes and lockouts, when the NDP does?

As someone who wants trade deals that are good for Canada and Canadian workers and don't contain harmful ISDs and respect our sovereignty, why would I vote strategically for any party who undermines that? #trade #cdnecon #Elxn2021

Median household income in #Calgary is about $100/k.

This is literally designed to exclude more than 50% of of families.
ā€œbut @youseepeeYYC, the families who earn much more than median income donā€™t need subsidized childcare as badly, they can afford to pay out of pocket, and therefore shouldā€

Someone, probably.

Letā€™s briefly examine why this is the wrong way to look at a social program.
When a service is universal and benefits *everyone* it is more difficult for politicians to play identity politics and wedge issues to divide people over cutting it.

Thatā€™s why *universal* programs are so much more powerful than boutique programs.

Removing teeth isn't always the solution to dental challenges. One of the many alternative solutions to excruciating tooth pain is root canal therapy. In this thread we share all you need to know about this procedure....
When you hear the term root canal therapy, your mind is probably plagued by ideas of its complexity. However, the procedure is easy and not as painful as your mind may have convinced you. It is aimed at removing the infected pulp and cleaning out the canal.
The pulp is the innermost part of the tooth and contains the nerves and blood vessels which nourish the tooth. The canal from which the treatment gets its nomenclature is what holds the pulp. When the pulp gets infected, the infection can spread to the extradental tissues and...

#thread on role of dental care pre-surgery. @medevidenceblog posted this. As a dentist who did a hospital based residency in the US, I have been saying this for a while! It is forgotten that attached to every persons body is an oral cavity aka mouth. #dentalcare #presurgery
Inside the mouth are teeth and gingiva(gums). Both potential sources for severe infections often asymptomatic for a long time. I used to be amazed during my private practice of 10 years in the US to see patients come in with severe gum infections #dentalcare #presurgery
And carious broken teeth with periapical pathology. I feel there is a huge area for improvement in this aspect of pre-surgical screening. For starters this needs to be made part of the PAT. A panoramic xray like this and a check up by a dentist, preferably #dentalcare #presurgery
