Are you confused about #WhereAreTheChildren? Of course you are. Your friendly immigrants’ rights advocate (reporting to you from vacation because the kids are counting on us to get this right). (THREAD)
“Did the government lose 1500 children that are now missing?”

...sort of. 1500 of the 7000 children who came here alone, mostly from Central America, are “missing” because the government couldn’t find them after they attempted to get in touch with them: pbs.org/wgbh/frontline…
“Ok. But #WhereAreTheChildren? Are they safe?”

We don’t know.

Some ran away, some didn’t pick up the phone at their last known number. Some likely ended up in human trafficking. Some likely reunited with their families. We may never track them down.
“How does the government just lose track of 1500 kids?”

GREAT QUESTION. Here’s how: Earlier this month, Attorney General Sessions announced plans to prosecute all migrants on the US-Mexico border. news.vice.com/en_us/article/…
“Well, whats wrong with prosecuting people coming here illegally?”

People have no option to come here “legally.” The system is broken. If the system worked, none of this could have happened in the first place. Back to the racist Sessions policy...
“What does it mean to ‘prosecute all migrants’?”

ANOTHER GREAT QUESTION.

AG Sessions made it official US policy to routinely seperate children from their parents. And that shit works. Hundreds of children have been ripped from their families.
Sessions’ policy to rip families apart worked so well that Customs and Border Protection reported that 658 kids were seperated from their families in the first 13 days of the program alone: judiciary.senate.gov/meetings/tvpra…
“How does this connect to #WhereAreTheChildren? Get back on track.”

Reader, we’re right on track. The evil web of Sessions’ immigration policy is twisty and as fucked up as can be. Last week, the good folks @voxdotcom reported this bombshell: vox.com/policy-and-pol…
Prosecuting eveyone means prosecuting everyone. Parents prosecuted for entering the US who get trasferred into criminal custody aren’t allowed to keep their kids. So children who came with their parents are now classified as “unaccompanied minors.” #WhereAreTheChildren
“Why is the Trump administration prosecuting all migrants?”

Simple answer: they are evil.
Complex answer: they are trying to discourage migrants from coming to the US by making them think that if you emigrate, they will take your kids from you.

#WhereAreTheChildren
“What happens to children once they are seperated from their parents?”

No one size fits all thing, but they likely spend some time in detention. Detention is immigration jail, and it is horrific. It was horrific before Trump, it is worse with Trump’s ethnic cleansing.
“What is detention like for children?”

Last week, the good folks @ACLU released this report, which details the horrific abuse children are facing in detention. Kids in detention are run over by cars, threatened with rape, being punched: cbsnews.com/news/aclu-repo…
Children in detention are being starved, they are freezing (detention is nicknamed “the icebox”), they do not have access to menstration products: cbsnews.com/news/aclu-repo…

#WhereAreTheChildren
“Now I’m rally confused. Are they missing or in detention? #WhereAreTheChildren?”

Some children are in detention. Some are wardens of the state. Some ran away and really are missing.

All of this is because the Trump Admin is trying to get rid of immigrants, past and future.
Families are seperated every.single.day by our immigration system, and it is conplicated and difficult to stop. And it is happening at a sickening level. But people have/are/were fighting back. #WhereAreTheChildren
“I’m still confused and mostly I just want to know how to help because this is disgusting.”

If you can donate, this verified fundraiser is like the Justice League of immigrants rights group who work specifically on family seperation: secure.actblue.com/donate/kidsatt…
“I’m tired of just donating, I want to take to the streets.”

June 1st, @WomenBelong @UNITEDWEDREAM @ACLU @MomsRising @MoveOn and others are calling for a National Day of Action for Kids: actionnetwork.org/event_campaign…

#WhereAreTheChildren
“No offense, but I want to help locally. Give me something to do in my community.”

None taken! Local direct service orgs usually need volunteers and donations. Check out informedimmigrant.com to find trusted groups all over the US who help refugees and immigrants.
