An example of how broken and Trump-centric all the "Russia" hysteria is that none of the serious media have looked at Manafort's Hapsburg (yes, sic) group & their activities in central Europe in support of Russian objectives in context of Trump's tirade

When the final history of this era is written re "Russia", the account will begin in the Soviet collapse & the rush of largely American vagabonds into the Soviet ruins to work with oligarchs, which then became respectable as the state distributed access to Russian energy.
Putin's rise as Yeltsin's fixer and Russian grievance avenger will be the middle. Missed will be how much Putin terrorised the oligarchs as much as Putin coopted them (why sanctioning oligarchs has no real effect on Russian behaviour). And how dumb Iraq-Libya was for RU-West
No one can talk sensibly about Russia as (very provincial & pacifistic) liberals became concerned only from 08 Nov 16 onwards while Trump winning destroyed the careers & sanity of a whole cast of American Dem & GOP apparatchiks who do know better but have been driven insane.
Western policy at present drives Russia into a de facto Eurasian pact with the Chinese and the Iranians. It is unsustainable. It is absolutely insane to run your geopolitics & security policy with an eye to what the NY Times' people think. The Indians & Israelis get this.
Trump per se is irrelevant here. He/successors will find themself trapped in this needless geopolitical conundrum, requiring some deals to be cut and understandings to be made. Or accept a Chinese-Iranian-Russian axis dominating a critical part of the Mackinder world island

Strongly suspect that it is only when the next US president takes office that a media currently utterly hysterical about anything Russia will look, critically, at what Western security pledges to "Ukraine" & other places really involve..."who will die for Donetsk?"
