The court ordered deadline passed earlier this week for reuniting children separated from their parents at the border.

This #SundayMorning we're taking a look at how many remain separated, what went wrong & what can be done to hold this administration accountable.

(THREAD)
(2) First, the numbers.

22 of the 103 children under the age of 5 remain separated from their parents.

HHS says these kids were brought by people who were not their parents or had extensive criminal histories, including murder, kidnapping, etc.

(3) The second group of children in HHS custody is much larger. The administration reported to the judge earlier this week that 900 out of the nearly 3,000 children over the age of 5 taken from their parents have not been reunited.

Why?

(4) HHS reported while they were still working on some cases, about 700 kids were ineligible. That's a big number.

There's a laundry list of reasons, but the largest group, nearly half, are the 431 parents who were deported without their children.

(5) How did this happen? When CPB was doing intake at the border, they had two categories: family units & unaccompanied kids.

There was no category in the paperwork for what they were doing to these families, so they created one:

"Deleted family units"

(6) That's a term that makes your heart stop, right?

Because that's what happened. They deleted families. When the paperwork went to the various departments, there was no category for what they had done to these families. No way to track them.

It became a manual process.
(7) Many parents were never told they were leaving their kids behind or given a choice. Some were even tricked into giving up rights to their kids, told they would see their kids sooner if they agreed to give up their asylum claims and be deported.

(8) The ACLU is fighting this and several court cases are pending, but there's been little actual accountability from the court on holding HHS responsible.

Experts agree the only real way to hold anyone responsible is to have Congressional hearings.

(9) Now we get to where you can help. One in 3 kids will not be reunited with their parents. That's unacceptable.

Lobby Congress HARD to resolve this or these kids will disappear into the system. And support the ACLU who is pursuing legal means to force reunification.
(10) We should also call for the resignation of every official involved in leading and covering up this atrocity.

Stephen Miller, @SecNielsen , Scott Lloyd

This house of horrors was no accident.
This was conducted with cruel intent using taxpayer $.
Demand consequences.

I'm not giving up on these kids and neither should you.
UPDATE: In the case of those deported or released, the ACLU will provide attorneys to help track down parents whose whereabouts are unknown and provide them legal counsel.

This ruling mandates that the government share info on whereabouts of parents. 🙌
