When discussing the Balfour Declaration, we usually remember the promise not to harm "the civil and religious rights of existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine". This limited pledge reduced Arabs to "non-Jews", promised no political and national rights, and was not kept.
But we almost always forget the other condition: that the establishment of a Jewish national home should not harm "the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any other country". We forget this clause because after 1945 Zionism became a Jewish consensus.

Many have been warning that the main danger to Jews comes from right-wing antisemites. Having encountered right-wing racists in the UK many times I know this to be the case. This does not excuse antisemitism on the left. On the contrary: left wing AS has terrible consequences. >>
Left wing AS betrays the left's commitment to fight racism. It boosts the right. But while we must raise concern and alarm regarding left wing antisemitism, there's no denial that physical violence against Jews comes almost always from the right. >>
And now, after the Pittsburgh massacre, some of those "fighting against antisemitism", palpably worried about the conversation shifting to the alt-right (as it should under the circumstances), work hard to remind us of antisemitism on the left. Thank you for the reminder. >>

I don't like the IHRA. But it a small part in the jigsaw. I believe recognition of most antisemitic incidents does not demand any particular position on Israel/Palestine. These posters are a contrary example - where people argue if it is or isn't. But it's an exception. >>
Most of the incidents so far - could be called out regardless of one's position on Israel. And had the Labour leadership been clear and forceful about these cases, we'd be in a very different place. That's what is needed now. >>
So if the leadership recognised and disavowed conspiracy theories, "fifth column", "traitor within", Judas references, etc etc, then we could take them more seriously. So far - we're not there yet.

2. Freedland says only people who say “Jews are Nazis” would contravene the IHRA definition. In fact, the IHRA definition is much broader, referring to “Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis” holocaustremembrance.com/working-defini…

I have cancelled my subscription to @LRB due to incredibly poor judgement in publishing Andrew O'Hagan's lengthy article on #GrenfellTowerFire, and then allowing him space the following week to attack bereaved community member using pseudo-objective word games #Justice4Grenfell
In his reply to the person's complaint that material was used without permission and her words were twisted, O'Hagan reveals new personal details about her and Grenfell survivors.
Throughout the article, he sets up Grenfell activists, local groups and residents' associations to look stupid/demanding, using words which undermine their work before and after fire: "barrage of complaints" "they pursued it obsessively" "dozens of other things they didn't like"
