In order to understand the #Idlib “de-escalation agreement”, one must understand the nature of relationship between #Putin & #Erdogan. Best to think of both leaders as being engaged right now. Not yet in a full marriage but neither is ready to walk away from each other just yet=>
2-Engagements don’t last forever. They either end in marriage or in walking away for good. This engagement phase will be tested over the coming months as Erdogan is expected to deliver on promises he made to his partner.
3-Naturally, Syrian Leadership is watching this engagement phase very closely. The base case scenario in Damascus appears to expect Erdogan to experience significant challenges in delivering on the promises he made to his partner. The coming few months will prove to be decisive

Russian warplanes are reportedly bombing #Idlib, a so-called "de-escalation zone" that is home to an estimated 2.9 million people, many of whom are living there because they were forcibly displaced from their homes elsewhere in Syria.

A few quick things to know... 1/
Russian/Syrian regime propaganda will claim that the bombing in #Idlib is only about terrorists. It will be framed as a (false) dichotomy: Either you support the bombing or you support terrorists. This is a wholly false and egregious campaign to whitewash a civilian massacre. 2/
Multiple international orgs have warned that an assault on #Idlib could result in the worst humanitarian crisis we have seen yet in Syria — catastrophic loss of life and massive #'s of both injured and displaced persons, which would exceed capacity to respond. 3/

2-Idlib isn’t a dumping ground. It is the place armed groups insisted on relocating to
3-Lister’s Article mentions that Idlib contains entire array of groups from “MOST MODERATE of Free Syrian Army to ...” Please tell us who these groups are by name so we can ascertain how “most moderate” they are @joshua_landis
