Daily reminder that Christians worship a brown-skinned, unemployed, Aramaic-speaking Palestinian Jew who didn’t have citizenship papers and lived under occupation.

This Savior of the world* healed the sick without asking for anything in return.

This Prince of Peace spoke in the tradition of the Hebrew prophets before him –– like Isaiah, who spoke of destroying swords and creating plowshares.

This Alpha & Omega was beaten in police custody, falsely accused and railroaded by the courts –– and then lynched on a tree for all to see.

A message from the Empire: don’t fuck with us.

This teacher, this rabbi, hung around with sex workers and drug dealers. He consistently lifted up the poor and refused to blame them for their reality.

This Son of Humanity had a specific message, one sung by his mother when she was still pregnant with him: tearing down the rich and the powerful, and lifting up the lowly.

This Christ –– this Messiah –– enacted nothing less than the reign of God. He preached good news to everyone…but it didn’t always sound so good to those with power and privilege.

This crucified man believed women. He sent the first apostle, Mary, to tell others of his new life, of God’s new life from death and destruction.

I offer this reminder of what formed the Christian faith a few thousand years ago.

If this doesn’t sound like anything you see of Christianity today, then what you’re seeing might be some charlatan-based bullshit and not the enigmatic movement Jesus started.
