Recently, I received a very interesting email by a client planning to study in Canada. The content of the letter was simple; Diploma or Masters Degree, which is more "profitable"?

Let's face it...why spend so much money going to school if there is no financial reward at the end?
Never be ashamed to make educational decisions based on monetary reward. Be pragmatic.
Now let's get to the details...
DEFINITION: A Masters (or any PostGrad) program is designed to produce NEW KNOWLEDGE.
A Diploma program is designed to acquire ALREADY ESTABLISHED KNOWLEDGE in a specific field of endeavour.
In Canada and in most developed countries, employers don't care about your degree as much as they care about your work experience in the field of interest.
Diploma programs are more practical than Masters program and usually come with a vital Co-Op (internship) that equip you with useful work experience that you can include in your resume, making you employable right away.
Generally speaking Masters holders earn higher than Diploma holders.
However, a masters degree is mostly required in high-skill areas such as R&D and vacancies are usually few and competitive.
Diploma programs are structured for industry specific needs and this explains why diploma holders get hired quickly upon graduation.
For instance: A Diploma degree in Power Engineering at Lambton College, Sarnia, Ontario, comes with a 4th Class Power engineer license which qualifies you to operate equipments in power plants, refineries, breweries etc.
Demand for Cybersecurity analysts, Data Scientists and Programmers is exploding in Canada.
You can improve your skills in any of these fields by enrolling for a Diploma in:
a) Network and Internet Security, at CDI College, Ottawa.
b) Data Analytics at Toronto School of Management
c) Social Media and Web Marketing at Reeves College
If you looking for a career in administration, why not enrol for a Diploma program in Accounting and Payroll Administration or a Diploma in Hospitality and Tourism Management. These are practical and job specific programs which are indispensable in industry.
Interested in the oil industry? How about obtaining a Diploma in Oil and Gas Administration. Practical and Industry Specific!
eCommerce is a continuously booming industry. Why not join the train by obtaining a Diploma in Global Supply Chain Management and International Trade at CDI College. Trust me you will be glad you did.
There are lots of practical and exciting Diploma programs out there which are not as "boring and theoretical" as the traditional university degrees.
You can obtain a:
i) Diploma in Game Development at the Institute of Technology Development, Canada.
ii) Diploma in Advertising & Graphic Design at the Canada International Royal Arts College.
iii) Diploma in Video Game Art. etc
Get your career moving again. Keep pushing...Keep wining!!!
