History best remembers “The First”.

The first person to do something undone. The first to overcome a barrier or reach a new height.

Given less than their due are the ones who pushed but were turned back.

The people who inspired others to reach for things once unreachable.

1/
Today was a day of historic firsts.

The first Congress with 100 women.

The first Native American and Somali-American Congresswomen.

The first openly Bi Congresswoman - or member of Congress at all.

...and on and on.

2/
In her 2008 Primary concession speech, Hillary Clinton said that there was a success even in her losing:

It would now be unremarkable for a woman to seek the presidency, to win primaries, to be the nominee.

It would be unremarkable for women to seek even the highest office.

3/
This year, women ran for office at every level, in greater numbers and with greater success than at any time in history.

The diversity of those winning candidates produced so many “The First’s”.

4/
In celebrating them, it’s worth remembering:

Remarkable successes are helped to become possible by the people who made it unremarkable to even try.

While it is a legacy some will deny, woven into the fabric of today’s many Firsts are threads first sewn by Hillary Clinton.
