On the very day Pell's own lawyer tries - weirdly - to play down the assault as a “plain vanilla sexual penetration case where the child is not actively participating”. Thereby agreeing it happened. But people like @holysmoke are in deep denial.
Even if they couldn't give a damn about Pell's victims, and the many other victims of Catholic priests whose testimony he stifled, people like @holysmoke should surely be able to see that their attempts to dismiss it all do the Catholic Church far more harm than good.
If ever there were a time for honesty and openness, truth and reflection, this is surely it.

The BBC will achieve balance when those contesting consumerism, corporations and the power structures pushing us towards planetary disaster get as much airtime as those promoting them. At the moment the ratio of appearances is about 1:1000
So deep is this bias that it's not even recognised as such. Consumerism and corporate power are treated as if they are the natural order of things. Those of us who challenge them exist beyond the limits of acceptable thought. The BBC doesn't even seem to realise it's excluding us
I can imagine an archivist of the future trawling through the BBC's output in 2019. "You mean to say they *knew* they were spiralling towards environmental breakdown, yet hardly anyone contesting it was allowed on air? What on earth was going on?"

Parked right outside the main doors of the hospital today was a minibus with the engine running, whose driver was playing on his phone. The fumes were blowing straight into the atrium. When I asked him to turn it off, I saw he was NHS staff. Utter madness.
I wonder how many of the people being treated in that building are ill as a result of air pollution? As usual, he seemed completely baffled by my request, apparently unaware of any connection.
I find this again and again. People aren't hostile when I ask them to turn their engines off. Just confused. When I've talked to them, I've often discovered that the very concept of air pollution is alien to them.

 Dear Media, to avoid committing media malpractice, if you invite someone on your show to talk about #climate & they say:
"The climate has always changed."

You must immediately say "No, we understand all observed warming is now human caused, overwhelming any natural changes."

You must immediately say:
You're confusing "weather" and "climate." The world as a whole is warming. One cold day in one place doesn't disprove global climate science.

 If they say "The scientists are only in it for the money" you have two choices:

Say either "Scientists get paid far less than fossil fuel lobbyists & climate deniers, & whatever they're paid has no effect on the validity of the science."
Or call me for a "Fuck you" response.

#Khashoggi Case Thread: I am going to ‘pin’ this post to use it as an ‘Info Thread’ on the #Khashoggi Case. I am in #Turkey. I’ve been following the case closely and with access to sources & experts here. This is a very ‘sensitive’ criminal case due to ‘Diplomatic Booby Traps’!!!
The Evidence Obtained Outside Cameras will not show any evidence of ‘tempering’ but other than license plates of dozens of diplomatic cars (Many with tinted windows-large trunks) with related time stamp, drivers Info, model/year: Nothing.
#Turkish Intel-Investigative Bodies also have the list of all Diplomatic & Private Saudi & “other significant’ Planes in #Turkey for the period of ‘interest.’ Many of the Target airports have their own security cameras & related evidence.

Just returned from Bangkok, where nations made little progress towards finalising the Paris agreement on climate change that aims to limit global temperature rises over the next 80 years.

It was my first @UN #climate change rodeo and there were a few things I wasn't aware of
Under Paris, countries agreed to a fairly detailed set of promises to keep global temperature rises under 2C by 2100.

It was the first time all nations - both developed and developing economies - signed up to the same set of climate rules. But they weren't binding
Parties gave themselves in effect 3 years to come up with a text agreed by everyone, ratified, and translated into national law on a state-by-state basis. The idea is the accord isn't legally binding, but the rulebook it provides could be on a national level

2/ This week I interviewed leadership and staff at New German Media Makers, @NDMedienmacher, a support network and advocacy group for journalists with a "migration background" who are working in German Media. goethe.de/en/kul/med/208… We talked for an hour just about objectivity.
3/ I have put questions about 'objectivity' in the German press to about 40 other people in the field, including editors, reporters and trainees, news executives, specialists in the study of it, heavy users of the product, like embassy staff. These are notes from those talks.

Good questions @RedsforNamesake. If confronting #climate change is your priority, it is imperative to ramp up carbon-free energy asap.

1. NJ will now ramp up renewable energy from 13% in 2017 and 20% by 2020 under old RPS to 35% by 2025 & 50% by 2030. Impressive leadership.
2. To ensure that this new clean energy replaces fossil fuels and contributes to #climate mitigation goals, NJ's new laws also make payments to ensure the continued operation of 3 South Jersey nuclear reactors that currently supply 31% of the state's electricity consumption.
2. Cont.: That measure is essential and ensures that nearly all of the new clean energy growth over the next 12 years builds on top of the fossil-free foundation provided by the state's existing nuclear plants.
